Rockstar QB1 Jayden Daniels Out Sunday: Readies for Exciting Week 1

The Washington Commanders are playing it safe, sitting QB1 Jayden Daniels in Sunday’s Preseason finale versus the New England Patriots.

Head Coach Dan Quinn spoke to reporters after their practice Friday and when asked if Daniels was going to play he gave a solid “No”. This is both good and bad. It’s good because Quinn and Commanders fans want a healthy QB1 at the helm in Week 1, so there’s no reason to take unnecessary risks. Then there’s the court of public opinion. Is there enough playtime in the preseason to convince fans that Daniels is the guy? It doesn’t matter now. The next time Daniels suits up will be in Week 1 versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sitting Jayden Daniels Is Part Of The Process

This is still a Preseason game. Players are still battling for jobs to stay on the roster. Coaches are still making hard decisions. “That is absolutely where the art of this is. There is a razor-thin line to stand on…Really the way we kinda look at it now it’s a 70-man roster. Some Veterans can go on the practice squad and can get activations up so we think bigger into that space,” Quinn said. “Sometimes those veterans, at a certain spot, if you needed depth that would provide a third, let’s call it, at a position vs. a rookie we think is going to keep making the strides.”

He added, “It’s been a big change adding Veterans on to the practice squad where your scope can go a little bigger. It’s always a hard conversation to have for either ball player whether veteran or rookie. But at the end of it, we will always decide on the competitive nature of what we’ve seen and make our decision from there.”

With Jayden Daniels securing his QB1 spot early, Sunday’s game is another chance for the remaining quarterbacks to show why they deserve a backup spot on the team. Currently, the Washington Commanders Depth Chart shows Marcus Mariota as the QB2, Jeff Driskol as QB3, and Sam Hartman as the QB4. Add the arrival of Trace McSorely last week, there is little doubt that at least one of these QBs will get cut. As of Friday, Mariota and Hartman were listed as Questionable, which could make Sunday Driskol and McSorely’s time to shine.

When it came to what spots are left on the team, Quinn added there are still quite a few, not less than 10. “The back half is still front and center. I’ve always loved this week and this game…You really find out someone’s grittiness…You get to see that type of competitive nature on display,” Quinn said. That grittiness will also be seen Sunday as the remaining quarterbacks try to perform their best to see who backs up Jayden Daniels.

But Until Week 1 arrives, here’s a Jayden Daniels highlight video.
