The Patriots Starting QB Battle Will End Next Week

It's been a quarterback battle in New England this preseason. Unlike other teams, who the Patriots' starting QB will be has not been immediately clear. The ninth-year player Jacoby Brissett is currently seen as the starter but 2024 third-overall pick Drake Maye is also in the conversation to be the starter.

While there has been some fluctuation in how the two quarterbacks have been seen this preseason, the decision of who will be the starter will reportedly come next week.

    Mayo's QB Comments

When asked about who the Patriots starting QB would be, Jerod Mayo commented,

"You come into camp, and you want to have an idea of how it's going. It's still a competition, and Jacoby is still QB1."

Despite Brissett still being QB1 currently, Mayo made it clear that both quarterbacks could lead the Pats' offense. While the first-year head coach prefers the veteran over the rookie right now, he is firmly confident in Maye's abilities. Mayo said that he has "100 percent" confidence in him that he could be the team's starter.

Mayo went on to say that this coming Monday or Tuesday will be when the Patriots starting QB will be decided. This is long awaited for Patriots fans and those in the New England sports media. Head coach Mayo's comment on when the starting quarterback would be known was informative yet mysterious at the same time.

"I would say by Monday night we should know who the quarterback is," he said. "Sunday night game, it's always hard to crank through the film. Especially on the road. But I think Monday-Tuesday we'll probably know who it is. Now, that doesn't mean I'll tell you who it is."

When the starting quarterback announcement is made, people in New England will likely be ready to rally around that guy and go full steam ahead.

    Brissett And Maye's Preseason Stats

In the 2024 preseason, Jacoby Brissett has gone 3 of 10 for 17 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception. Drake Maye has gone 8 of 14 for 66 yards with zero passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. He did have a four-yard rushing touchdown against the Eagles last week.

Maye's higher passing numbers could indicate that he is better at converting deep balls. wide receiver Kayshon Boutte had three receptions for 23 yards on four targets. Fifth-year running back and new Patriot JaMycal Hasty had one reception for 23 yards on one target. Fourth-round pick Javon Baker also had one catch for twelve yards on four targets.

Second-round pick Ja'Lynn Polk only made two catches for six yards on three targets. But it's only preseason so hopefully the wide receiver out of the University of Washington makes bigger contributions in the regular season. Maye spread the wealth in his time on the field last Thursday, throwing multiple passes over 10 yards.

Not only did he pass the ball effectively, he used his legs to pick up yards and even a score as well. The third-overall pick rushed four times for 15 yards, an average of 3.75 yards per carry. Jacoby Brissett has not rushed at all this preseason. While Drake Maye is a mobile quarterback, Brissett has not been known for that.

    Patriots' Starting QB Thoughts

Drake Maye should be the starter. He is the freshest guy. You know what you're getting with Brissett and while he is not a bad quarterback, I don't see him as a guy who will be the starting quarterback long-term. Sure, Maye will make some mistakes, but every rookie quarterback does. Brissett could make the same, if not, similar mistakes that the rookie would make.

Rip off the band-aid now and start him. Maye is showing his versatility in the preseason and has the upper hand on Brissett. The UNC QB has a higher ceiling due to his strong arm and great mobility. The Patriots owe to themselves to try out Maye and see what he can do for the team.

The Patriots' preseason finale is on the road Sunday against the Commanders at 8:00 p.m. EDT. This is a matchup against another highly drafted quarterback in Jayden Daniels. We'll see how Drake Maye stacks up against him and if he continues to impress.
