Paramount Leaks Upcoming 3rd Avatar Series

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender and its follow-up Legend of Korra have been living on scraps of gossip regarding the newest animated series, first teased in 2022. While theories thrive and expectations build, only a few concrete details have been released to the awaiting audience. The new show, created by Avatar Studios, is rumored to air in 2025 on Paramount+. Let’s gather together what we know as the new year fast approaches.

Word of a new series first hit fan circles in 2022, when Avatar News dropped the information. Presumably, their source was Edelweiss, a digital book service that leaked the series while promoting an Avatar novel. “A new animated series from Avatar Studios, featuring a brand-new Avatar, is currently in production and is set to release in 2025, which will set the perfect landscape for the continuation of our series,” the blurb said. It bears mentioning that, alongside this news, they also promoted the 2024 live-action Netflix show which did indeed drop as foretold.

Speculation and extrapolation followed the soft announcement. The Avatar cycle established in the previous shows conforms to a pattern: Air Nomads, Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, and Fire Nation. As the Legend of Korra followed a waterbending Avatar, it stands to reason that the next animated series will feature an earthbending lead. Feeding into this notion, the Edelweiss announcement tied into The Rise of Kyoshi, a novel that deals with a historical Avatar who hailed from the Earth Kingdom – possibly relevant to the new show.

As they consider the cultural changes and technological advancements that occurred in the 70 years between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, fans are also preparing for a similar leap forward. Theories abound championing the notion of a modern Avatar setting, perhaps leaning into a cyberpunk era for the franchise.

Other Avatar Studios Releases

On the whole, however, the show remains shrouded in mystery. Casting information has yet to be revealed, and Paramount+ has not teased the schedule. Meanwhile, we have several updates about another Avatar Studios project, Aang: The Last Airbender, a film also originally slated to release in 2025.

We will catch up with Aang and his friends, now meeting them as adults. With a cast list that boasts Dave Bautista and K-pop star Eric Nam, the upcoming animated movie presents a more robust figure on the horizon.

“Now, we’re making a movie, our first movie,” cocreator Bryan Konietzko shared his excitement on the official YouTube channel. “As cool as it is to work in television, feature films are where you get to craft something where you’re not just rushing and having to put it out.” Even so, the movie’s release has been pushed to January 20, 2026, an ominous sign to those waiting for the earthbending show.

Whatever the production delays, chances are good that the studio will deliver a high-caliber product. The original Airbender series remains a beloved staple in animation, lauded for its memorable, excellent, and well-developed characters.
