Atletico Madrid's Summer Transfer Activity Explained

Atletico Madrid have been as active as ever in the summer transfer window. Aiming to rebuild and strengthen their squad after a disappointing last season according to their standards, they finished just fourth and went trophyless at the end of the campaign. Looking to improve on that in the 24/25th La Liga campaign with several statement signings and departures, Diego Simeone’s men look more ready than ever for the new season. Their last La Liga title was in the 2020/21 season.

    Atletico Madrid Making a Statement

It’s safe to say that Atletico Madrid arguably has had the best summer transfer window in Spain and probably in Europe. Neighbors Real Madrid already made a huge statement with the long-awaited free arrival of Kylian Mbappe. Barcelona struggled with financial stability and was forced to sell some of its best players. It was up to Diego Simeone to take advantage and strengthen the squad and maybe clinch the La Liga crown this season.

Having splashed 157M pounds and getting a profit of 70 to 90M. Atletico Madrid’s net spend for the season is 93.4M pounds. It shows how well-balanced they have been in terms of upgrading their squad, profitable player sales, and securing them from any financial fair play(FFP) scare later on. Let’s examine their transfer activity and ambitions in more detail.

    New Faces at Wanda Metropolitano

A bundle of new names for Atletico Madrid supporters to relish this season, bolstering the defense, mid, and especially the attack. One of the biggest stories of the summer transfer window and probably the most expensive transfer yet is Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid. The surprise 75M euro signing from Manchester City shows huge promise and long-term ambition for the club from Madrid. Julian, hailed as untouchable once by Pep Guardiola, decided he needed to move on from Manchester and not be under steady in Erling Haaland. The Argentine World Cup winner won every possible trophy to win in club football with Manchester City but eventually preferred regular first-team action.

Another notable signing up at the top is Alexander Sorloth. The Norwegian striker bagged 17 goals last season for Villareal CF and certainly caught Simeone’s attention. Atleti paid 35M Euros for his signature and will give great depth in attack. Atleti also bolstered their midfield with former Chelsea captain Connor Gallagher. The Englishman has every quality in his locker to be playing for Simeone. Tenacious, reliable, and has amazing workhorse and leadership qualities. Simeone never missed out on this one after he was deemed a mere squad player by new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca. Many outgoings in defense, such as Stevan Savic, made them sign Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad.

    Very Efficient with Departures

A few familiar faces leaving the Wanda Metropolitano was significant in Atletico Madrid spending big this time around. As big as the spending should be, there should also be considerate player sales to escape the wrath of La Liga FFP regulations. That’s something potential title rivals Barcelona haven’t managed to do. Key players like Alvaro Morata, who was the captain of the Spanish side and won the Euro, left for AC Milan for a fee of around 11M Euros.

Morata scored some important goals while at Atletico Madrid, but he knew he would most likely be replaced. The Imminent sale of Joao Felix to Chelsea for almost 60 Million pounds with add-ons was only a matter of time as he was no longer in Simeone’s plans anymore with many factors in it. Caglar Soyuncu, the Turkish International who arrived for free in a few seasons back from Leicester City was sold this summer for around 8 Million euros.

After a long transfer saga, Samu Omorodion’s move to Chelsea for 40M euros collapsed. He was later left out of the squad and eventually sold to FC Porto for about 15M euros and add-ons. 15M was a surprise, considering they accepted the proposed offer from Chelsea, which was 40. It shows they were desperate to offload him and generate any sort of funds possible. Atletico Madrid were the 6th biggest spenders this summer. Even with that, they have a net spend of around 100M Euros. Shows efficient transfer strategies and long-term planning.
