Floyd Mayweather-John Gotti III Rematch Disappoints at Casino

    2024-08-25

Another exhibition match took place on Saturday night at Big Bola Casino in Mexico City where Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Gotti III disappointed the audience which was promoted by Fernando Beltran (Promociones Zanfer) and Floyd Mayweather (Mayweather Promotions). Televised on DAZN PPV, the vastly uneventful and underwhelming eight-round exhibition didn’t help improve the state of boxing in any way.

Lackluster Performance Between Floyd Mayweather vs. Gotti

In the first round, the start of the match was slow and after the bell, Gotti told the referee Hector Afu that this was the end of the round. In the second round, Floyd Mayweather initiated waving the referee out of the ring in what seemed to be a rehearsed move. Gotti was almost nonaggressive while he only landed a few punches in the face. This was out of serious contention by the third round and fighting turned into a circus. Gotti was against the ropes, and instead of throwing punches, he was protesting.

The fourth and fifth rounds belonged to Floyd Mayweather though there seemed to be not much action. The sixth and seventh rounds also remained in a similar vein with him occasionally connecting and Gotti doing very little for himself. Finally, in the eighth and the last round, the audience could not tolerate any more and started booing. Despite Floyd Mayweather who retired from professional boxing with a perfect record of 50-0, and Gotti with an exhibition record of 2-0, the pugilists did not give a spirited contest that was expected by fans.

    Undercard Highlights

This fight card is an undercard, containing the combination of both exhibitions and competitive fights, which provided some thrills. Victor Ortiz is a Super welterweight fighter with a record of 33-7-3, 25 KOs, appeared in an exhibition match against southpaw Rodrigo Cordia with a record of 21-8-1, 11 KOs with an eight-round battle. The first part of the fight was quite a stir and an interesting one which benefited the paying audience since both fighters were actively throwing and landing solid punches on one another, unlike the pace that the fight showcased in the later rounds.

As for the co-feature, WBC Silver Super Bantamweight titlist, Alan Picasso (29-0-1, 16 KOs) stopped Azat Hovhannisyan (21-5, 17 KOs) in a 12-round Fight. Picasso was dominating the initial phase to which Hovhannisyan was responding perfectly well. A point deduction in the fourth round for a low blow added to Hovhannisyan’s woes. Despite Hovhannisyan’s late surge, Picasso secured a comfortable victory with scores of 118-110 twice and 120-108.

In the super middleweight division Louis ‘Zurdo’ Rodriguez who has a record of 15-1 with 14 knockouts on his record was up against Cesar Vaca who had a record of 17-1-1 with 11 knockouts in a match slated for ten rounds. Vaca did not let Rodriguez push their favorite fighting style to clinch and exchange as that ended up in a slow battle. More time it was Vaca who connected with the cleaner shots to be awarded a majority decision with scores of 95/95, 97/94, 98/92.

    Rising Prospects Shine

In the undercard match-up, 18 year old Lightweight Curmel Melton with a record of 5-0 with four knockouts was too strong for Victor Vazquez who had a record of 5-3-1 as Melton knocked him out in the first round. Melton knocked down Vazquez with a left hook and then uncontrollable punches to give a perfect ending to the fight lasting 55 seconds only.

Mexico’s Aaron Silva (16-1, 12 KOs) had an easy night against a game but overmatched late replacement in Alberto ‘Pollo’ Artiga whom he disposed of in the third round by way of TKO. Another undercard fight could be for Cecilia Rodriguez with a record of 14-1-1 who won her match against Arlen Sanchez in a competitive 8-round fight, which came down to the wire and saw a spirited late surge from Sanchez. All in all, there was a certain level of excitement shown at the event although the main fight between Floyd Mayweather and Gotti was disappointing.
