Dolphins Release Mike White Before Start Of 2024 Season

The Miami Dolphins cut veteran backup Quarterback Mike White on Sunday morning. White came over from the New York Jets and was competing for the number two quarterback spot this NFL Preseason. At the end of the NFL Preseason, the Dolphins cut White and made Quarterback Skylar Thompson the QB2 to back up starting Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Now, that the preseason is over, this will be one of many cuts the Dolphins will make to have a 53-man roster for the beginning of the season.

Miami Dolphins Cut Quarterback Mike White

Mike White signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins that was worth $8 million. Now that the Dolphins released White they save $3.5 million in cap space. White came over from the New York Jets and played two seasons throwing for 2,219 yards in his career with nine touchdown passes and 13 interceptions while completing 62.6% of his pass attempts. The Dallas Cowboys originally drafted Mike White in the fifth round of the 2018 draft.

Miami Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel was looking for a quarterback who could handle and manage being under pressure and stress in this preseason between the two backup quarterbacks. Both quarterbacks split reps in the Dolphins offseason. Mike White completed 20 of 43 passes and 179 yards while Thompson completed 35 of 61 passes with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

McDaniel said the decision was also based on how players react and adapt in situations. Being a backup quarterback is stressful in a way where after the starter goes down a backup has to be ready to play and jump right into the game.

"... I'm looking for nuances, resolve, the conviction after a bad play happens, how the offense is coming to the line of scrimmage, how you're leading them, all sorts of different things on top of what I've already learned about them."

    Final Thoughts

The Miami Dolphins cut Quarterback Mike White at the end of the preseason due to a lack of productivity and how he handled certain situations on the field during practice and the three preseason games in which he played. White had a completion of 46.5% in all three preseason games. Thompson had better numbers and was able to operate the offense in the last preseason game against Tampa successfully.

Skylar Thompson is officially the backup quarterback for the Miami Dolphins for the new NFL season. Thompson had better numbers and stats in this year's preseason to win the job in Miami. The Miami Dolphins will start the 2024 NFL season at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 8.
