Kristian Campbell Could Make His MLB Debut at Fenway Park in 2024

September 1st marks extended rosters for the MLB, allowing two players to be added to their 26-man teams. The Red Sox are slipping away at the chance to reach the playoffs as August ends. With a losing season at Fenway Park this year and a struggle to find consistency, will Alex Cora call up this year’s most effective rookie, Kristian Campbell?

5 Reasons Kristian Campbell Should Be Called Up In September

Kristian Campbell has been called to Triple-A and has been there for nearly a week. It seems unheard of to promote him given the amount of other talent that has put in more time. The Red Sox don’t usually promote so soon, while they are in a tough position this summer, let’s consider a few points before we throw the baby out with the bath water. Here are the top five reasons Kristian Campbell should be called up to the majors this September:

    1. 22 year-old, Kristian Campbell is the oldest of the Big 4 despite being the newest call-up from Double-A
    2. Red Sox Stats Twitter account shared “Out of all minor league players with 400 plate appearances or more this year, Kristian Campbell leads with a 188 wRC+, and the next closest is 167.”
    3. He is versatile and could offer the Red Sox several opportunities to be molded into their needs. Playing at shortstop, third base, DH, and center field, Kristian Campbell is the golden child of the farm system for the Sox right now.
    4. The Red Sox need right-handers to balance out the lineup. With a heavy lefty squad, Alex Cora will be looking to make this expansion worthy of a decent balance for the offensive lineup moving forward.
    5. Fred Lynn did it, why can’t Kristian Campbell?

‘Young Barry Bonds’ Giving Fred Lynn Vibes

Kristian Campbell, dubbed “Young Barry Bonds” by his fellow teammates and biggest competition, the Big 3, when they were all playing Double-A earlier this summer for the Portland Sea Dogs. In Campbell’s first week of Triple-A in Worcester, he’s had 19 at-bats, 8 hits, 9 RBIs, 2 HR, his batting average .421. Some will tell you it’s too soon and the Red Sox organization would never promote him this September.

Here’s the thing, the Sox are left with less than hopeful signs they will make it to the playoffs unless they can make drastic changes. Unless they think outside the box and retain wins at home they will most certainly be breaking the hearts of the fans this season.

But wait, could history repeat itself? Kristian Campbell might just be the next Fred Lynn but we will never know if Alex Cora doesn’t take a shot. Fred Lynn in 1974 was pulled up as a rookie to Fenway, smashing records that year.

Lynn is the infamous Red Sox center-fielder, that made his major-league debut in September of 1974 under the same circumstances of roster expansion. Although the rules were a bit different back then, Lynn took his chance to shine and outperformed almost everyone in his first year.

Earning awards such as Rookie of the Year, and AL MVP, Lynn also made the All-Star team. He led the AL in runs scored, slugging percentage, and doubles. Lynn went on to earn the prestigious Golden Glove for his outstanding defense. Could Kristian Campbell be the next Fred Lynn or will the clubhouse smother his chances to shine this year in the majors?

Alex Cora Should Promote Young Sensation

Kristian Campbell is an excellent candidate for this upcoming September extended roster position. The Red Sox have the potential to make major impacts on their standings in the AL East and wildcard chances. They need to focus on their bullpen first and offense after. They probably will add one pitcher and look to who will make the most sense for them to balance out the roster. But can he beat the Big 3 to Fenway Park?

Kristian Campbell would be able to support in multiple positions that the Sox are needing and has improved greatly on his power-hitting this year. He is no longer just making contact but has adapted quickly to the requests of the clubhouse. While Campbell is outperforming in Worcester, the Red Sox will soon determine who will be added to the roster over September.

These are tough conversations the clubhouse will be having and we all know how these decisions can untimely make or break a team’s entire season. As fans, we vote for young blood, a new surge of energy that will ultimately give us a chance to compete in the playoffs.
