Tyson Fury’s Trainer Blames Fitness For Harsh Defeat

The trainer of Tyson Fury has spoken out on the sensational loss of the former WBC heavyweight champion. Fury lost by unanimous decision to Oleksandr Usyk in the fight for the undisputed heavyweight title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last May. According to Dominic Ingle, the loss of the strap and possibly the title resulted from a poor condition that he was in that denied him the ability to dominate at critical times in the fight. Fury tried hard to tackle his opponent Usyk but he did not get a chance to do that, hence he was beaten and defeated.

Fitness Problems Interfered With Fury’s Performance

According to Dominic Ingle, Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) was not in good physical form to keep up with the nagging pressure required to follow up when he stunned Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) mid-bout. He thinks that if Fury had come for the fight in good shape he could have taken advantage of those openings and it may have led to victory over his opponent. Fury failed at conditioning and was unable to continue thus making him vulnerable to defeat.

This critique is, however, not shocking considering that he has always courted controversy due to his physique even in wins over Wilder, Chisora, and Whyte. Even in those fights, he emerged as a winner, but according to Ingle, Fury’s conditioning was a setback for him this time.

Unfortunately, Ingle fails to note that Tyson Fury was badly stunned in the ninth round by Usyk and was only pulled out of PDB by the referee. Fury was given a standing eight count, which is quite rare. This break gave him a chance to regain his stand and the fight resumed. This intervention that the referee has applied has brought controversy since there are people who say that he was overwhelmed and was likely to be knocked out.

Age and Conditioning A Factor In Fury’s Decline

Age was also a factor pointed out by Ingle as influencing Tyson Fury's performance. Ingle also accused him of relying on mauling tactics which Usyk’s team successfully nullified. The absence of typical brutish power severely limited Tyson Fury and for the first time in his career, he had to rely solely on his boxing ability which was no match for Usyk’s.

His jaw, which has raised concerns before, may have been worsened by the trilogy bouts against Deontay Wilder. The tough punishment he received in those fights possibly impacted his punch resistance, and causally made him susceptible to Usyk’s power. The left hand that Usyk landed in the ninth round which could have ended the fight also highlighted his reduced tolerance.

    In Conclusion

Nevertheless, according to Ingle, there are numerous reasons why Tyson Fury lost the fight such as fatigue, the decline in his physical prowess, and the ravages of time as a result of bearing the brunt of the ring in his previous bouts. This explains why Usyk’s strategy and conditioning rendered him helpless and won him the match. With his career advancing, concerns regarding his competitiveness in the ring have skyrocketed, contributing to the ongoing discussion surrounding the uncertain future of the "Gypsy King."
