Atletico Madrid Passes Girona Test In Great Fashion

Atletico Madrid continued their 24/25 La Liga campaign against Girona on Matchday 2. Diego Simeone’s side had managed a 2-2 draw against Villarreal in their opening game of the season. It was not an impressive scoreline for Diego Simeone, however, his side responded well to a Girona team that was menacing all through last season.

They ended up outshining the Catalan side with three goals without any response. Goals from the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Marcos Llorente, and Koke in the late minutes gunned down the Catalan. The result placed Atletico Madrid third in the La Liga. Simeone will be happy with the result knowing that with his new signing, his team will be far better compared to last season.

Diego Simeone had set up a defensive lineup against Girona and it seemed to work out for the Argentine. Girona tried much to control the game and nail the home team however, they lacked the clinical edge. Atletico Madrid on the other looked dangerous in transition and after a while, they took the lead through Griezmann.

The 2nd half came and the game had not gone and The Madrid club secured the 2nd through Marcos Llorente. This piled up more pressure on Girona. But Diego Simeone’s side proved to be very disciplined keeping them off. Jan Oblak also had a couple of nice saves to deny the Catalans. At the stoppage time, Koke made it 3, completely killing off the game.

Diego Simeone’s Assessment of the Game

Simeone was full of respect for Girona as he said “We were facing an opponent who had an extraordinary last season, with different ways of attacking that invite you to split, that creates difficulties and I place great value on concentration and never losing the block that prevented them from having scoring chances and an offensive game.

“The goal created more security for what was to come in the second half, which we were able to handle with great confidence and a strong, fast counterattack, with the players who came on from the bench giving us what we needed from the game.”

Simeone on his New Signings

He also spoke about the performance of his new signings, he said: “[Gallagher] came on with a lot of energy,” Simeone said in his post-match news conference when asked about the England midfielder’s debut. “That’s what we’ll get from him. He needs a bit of time to get used to opponents and his teammates. With his enthusiasm and passion, we have to help him so that adrenaline is positive for the team.”

He then moved on to Julian Alvarez, and he said: “We know what Julian has, what he can give us,” Simeone said. “We’ll try to take advantage of his qualities whether as a center forward, a second forward or on the wing. We’re convinced we have an incredible player for the present and the future.

“At River [Plate] he was a number nine, with Argentina he was a number nine at the World Cup. At City [Erling] Haaland’s there, they shared [the position] or he played wide. He can play in different positions… We have him and Sørloth. I’ll have to figure it out.”
