New York Yankees Find Unexpected Power In Win

In a day that saw the New York Yankees “big three,” bats of Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton were quiet, an unexpected trio powered a 5-2 win over the Washington Nationals. With Soto, Judge, and Stanton combining to go 1-of-13 at the plate, Shortstop Gleyeber Torres, Catcher Austin Wells, and Third Baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. all hit solo homers.

First baseman D.J. LeMahieu hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the balance of the Yankees runs. Starting Pitcher Nestor Cortes gave the New York Yankees 6.2 solid innings, allowing just four hits and one run, while walking just two and striking out five.

Jazz Chizholm, Jr. Has Infused Team With Energy

Since coming to the Yankees from the Miami Marlins in late July, Chisholm has brought a real spark to the Bronx. As a Yankee, Chisholm is batting .292/.329/.653 with eight home runs, five stolen bases, and a .982 OPS. His glove has been slightly shaky at 3B, committing five errors in 17 games. But it is worth noting that he has never been asked to play the hot corner before coming to the New Yankees. His steady glove in stints at both SS and second base throughout his career shows promise that he will figure the position out.

    Clubhouse Spark

What has stood out the most about Chisholm is the energy he brings to the team. Admittedly, sometimes the New York Yankees can seem a bit cold and corporate with the no facial hair policy and absence of names on the back of the jersey. Not since Jazz arrived. In his second game with the Yanks on July 29 at the Philadelphia Phillies, Chisholm went 2-of-4 with two home runs and three RBI. His joy in the dugout after rounding the bases both times lit a fire that showed no signs of burning out. Since arriving, with Chisholm in the lineup, the Yankees are 12-6 for a .667 winning percentage.

It's Not Just the Aaron Judge Show

The single most crucial factor in the New York Yankees hot August is that it isn’t just the Aaron Judge show anymore. Everyone in the lineup is contributing to the offense. So, on nights when a Judge, or a Soto, or Stanton aren’t hitting bombs into the parking lot, the team can still win. A Torres, or a Wells, or a LeMahieu will need to step up. Hitting like he did last night or just bringing the energy to the clubhouse, Jazz Chisholm, Jr. will continue to be a major contributing factor if the New York Yankees are going to have success in October.
