The upcoming Bleach: Rebirth of Souls was already an exciting event for fans, but with the recent announcements of Chad and Kisuke Urahara joining the roster, the hype has definitely intensified. If you’re not familiar with Bleach or why this is exciting, we’ve got you covered. Here's everything you need to know about the game and this new announcement.

    New Bleach Fighting Game

Unlike Naruto with its regular releases, there has not been a new Bleach fighting game since Bleach: Heat the Soul 7 in 2010, and even that was a Japan-exclusive title limited to the PlayStation Portable. However, Bandai Namco has finally seen fit to grace us with a new game, and hopefully a better one than the recent arena fighter Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash. In case you don’t know, Bleach is an anime that hails from the same era as Naruto and One Piece. However, whereas those two other shows never stopped releasing new episodes, a long hiatus for the show had resulted in a drop in popularity.

Now, with the advent of The Thousand-Year Blood War, which will finish the Bleach saga, that interest has definitely seen a resurgence. Bleach by design practically begs to be a fighting game. There’s a plethora of cool characters, nearly all of whom wield equally cool swords with even cooler special abilities. Yes, it’s that cool. Similar to Dragon Ball Z, the entire franchise revolves around fast, high-powered fights. It’s definitely a fandom that lends itself to the classic “Who would win in a fight?” arguments. This is why it’s such big news that a modern fighting game is just around the corner.

    Chad and Urahara

As noted, there are a lot of characters in Bleach. Unfortunately, unlike the recent Naruto games with their massive casts, there just isn’t a decade of Bleach character models to pull from. This is both good and bad; characters cost money to make so roster space is going to be limited, but this should mean every character has the opportunity to be wonderfully detailed as we saw in Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles a couple of years ago. As a result of this, though, some characters are shoo-in for Rebirth of Souls, while others are definitely long shots.

Chad is one of those shoo-in characters. He’s a member of the core cast from early in the story, and although he isn’t a soul reaper, he possesses enough spiritual power to participate through the Soul Society arc and beyond. To boot, as a gentle giant that packs a punch, he’s a fan favorite. In terms of gameplay in Rebirth of Souls, he looks to be, unsurprisingly, something of a bruiser. He has a couple of quick gap-closers and a charged beam that should give him some medium-range options.

On the other hand, Kisuke Urahara was certainly a long shot. Despite his popularity, he doesn’t participate much in the earlier parts of the series. Nonetheless, he is canonically an incredibly capable soul reaper, and his mechanics seem to support that. He looks to have a counter-punch playstyle in Rebirth of Souls, sporting a slow startup projectile with good tracking that defeats other projectiles, as well as a quicker poke to keep his opponent in check. He also has an ability that is described as him taking the battle more seriously for a short time, and his awakening speeds up the rate at which the reversal gauge charges.

The Best Time to Be a Bleach Fan

After an entire decade with no new episodes, fans now have new Bleach to watch. And now, accompanying that, we have a brand new Bleach fighting game to enjoy. Rebirth of Souls is also set to cover the first two major arcs of the story, so this may mean either plans for DLC, or future releases to cover the rest. If we are lucky, we may even get a second version of Urahara in which he can unleash his Bankai.

Rebirth of Souls looks like a ton of fun. Clips shown so far really reveal the tremendous amount of love and effort going into the game. The mechanics of it look pretty unique, as well, so it may attract players who are burnt out on arena fighters or who aren’t already fans of Bleach with its novel gameplay. Although there’s no official release date set, fans can probably anticipate Bleach: Rebirth of Souls releasing on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC early next year.
