Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara will return to reprise their roles from the original Beetlejuice. New faces to the franchise include Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci.
A Beetlejuice sequel has been in the works since 1990 when two scripts for the second movie were commissioned. Over the years, several scripts have been thrown out. However, things seemed to be looking up in 2015 when Winona Ryder confirmed her return to the franchise. That is until the project was shelved again in 2019. Three years later, the sequel was re-announced, and by May 2023, production was in full swing. Next month, audiences will finally get to see a sequel 34 years in the making.
Animated Robots Galore
September will see its first major animated release on the 20th with Paramount Pictures’ Transformers One.The film will feature the never-before-seen origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron. Fans of the franchise will know these two as sworn enemies. But Transformers One intends to reveal all about their initial friendship and its lasting effect on Cybertron. The movie will feature the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Bryan Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, John Hamm, Laurence Fishburne, Steve Buscemi, and Keegan-Michael Key.
Just a week later, on September 27th, DreamWorks’ newest movie, The Wild Robot, will hit theaters. The film is based on Peter Brown’s book series of the same name. The story tells of a robot, Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) who is shipwrecked on an island and befriends a young gosling. The Wild Robot was directed by Chris Sanders, known for his work writing and directing How to Train Your Dragon. The animation takes inspiration from Disney classics, where Sanders got his start, and Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. Audiences can expect to hear familiar voices like Pedro Pascal, Mark Hamill, and Catherine O’Hara.
A Month of Star-Studded Horror
As September hits, people begin preparing for the spooky season. What better way to prepare than with some new horror movies? The Front Room, A24’s newest, will be the first to watch out for, sharing its release date with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. On September 6th, Max and Sam Eggers’ debut horror flick will grace the silver screen. The movie is adapted from Susan Hill’s short story of the same name. Young, pregnant couple Belinda (Brandy Norwood) and Norman (Andrew Burnap) must take on the care of Norman’s obstinate and deeply religious grandmother when his father dies.
Following The Front Room, September 13th will see the release of Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil, a remake of the Danish horror movie The Guests (2022). A visit to the British countryside turns nightmarish for an American family when they feel they are no longer safe with their hosts. James McAvoy returns once again to the horror genre, having previously made waves for his roles in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split (2016), Glass (2019), and It Chapter Two (2019). Speak No Evil was originally set for a summer release but was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
The final horror movie of September to keep an eye out for is electric body horror The Substance. September 20th can’t come soon enough. The movie already holds a 91% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The story follows Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) as she turns to a black-market drug to cope with her aged appearance and fading relevance. The Substance made its exhilarating world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year where it received a standing ovation. At the festival, Coralie Fargeat won best screenplay for The Substance.
