The New York Giants Made Correct Decision To Keep Tommy DeVito

With every team across the NFL having their 53-man roster now set, it is time to countdown to the start of the regular season which is nearly a week away. As for the New York Giants, they have their 53-man roster all set to go with the hopes that their roster is talented enough to bounce back from their 6-11 campaign a season ago. One of those moves was keeping undrafted Quarterback Tommy DeVito.

Many roster cuts and moves were expected that the New York Giants would make this past week. From cutting Cornerback Darnay Holmes and also waiving but signing Wide Receiver Isaiah Hodgins to the practice squad, there were not too many shocking moves made by Brian Daboll, Joe Schoen, and company. However, New York decided to ride with three quarterbacks for the 2024 season as they're keeping quarterback and fan favorite DeVito on the active roster to be the third-string on the team. While keeping three quarterbacks on a roster is not usual, the Giants chose to keep DeVito this season.

Injury History At Quarterback Position For New York Giants

It's no secret that the New York Giants have had issues with having a healthy quarterback under center for them and last year was no different. Daniel Jones, who the Giants gave a $160 million deal last offseason, saw his 2023 season be cut well short as a neck and season-ending torn ACL caused Jones to miss 11 games last season. Despite looking healthy and mobile throughout training camp and in his first and only preseason start he made, Jones' history of lingering injuries is a great reason to keep Tommy DeVito around.

New York also signed former Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Drew Lock this offseason on a one-year deal to be the New York Giants second-string quarterback, but he's already dealing with an injury as well. After starting in the Giants first preseason game against the Detroit Lions back on August 8, Lock suffered a hip pointer and strained oblique that kept him out for some time during training camp.

The injury history for these two quarterbacks, and of Jones in particular, had to play a factor in the New York Giants' decision to keep DeVito. Despite only starting in six games for New York last season, you at least know what you have in DeVito which is why the injury bug of Jones and Lock is a great reason for NY to keep "Tommy Cutlets" around.

DeVito Has Shown Flashes Of Being NFL- Caliber QB

Despite DeVito only seeing a little NFL action and in particular just six starts, in a few of those games that he played, DeVito showed what he's capable of. While it may not be likely that he'll touch the field that much if not at all this season, you still have a guy who has proven to have moments of being a starting quarterback in the league.

DeVito led the New York Giants last season on a three-game winning streak in late November and in the beginning of December and gave Giants fans something to be happy about in what was a lost season. Perhaps the most notable start that he made for "Big Blue" came under the lights in primetime on "Monday Night Football." Against the Green Bay Packers in Week 14 last season, DeVito passed for 158 yards on 17 completions and was very accurate with the ball having just four incompletions the entire night. He also had two touchdowns and led the New York Giants on a game-winning drive in the waning seconds of the game.

That game coming against a playoff team was impressive as he showed poise and confidence in the pocket. Even though his next two starts on the road against the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles were rough, and also resulted in the undrafted quarterback being benched, there's probably a good bet he worked so hard this offseason to improve his game. DeVito has shown in glimpses that he could be a reliable and starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL if the New York Giants need him this season.
