Amazon confirms Untitled Tomb Raider game in the works

Amazon Games is partnering with Crystal Dynamics, who previously owned Tomb Raider, to create an Untitled Tomb Raider game. This new multi-platform narrative promises thrilling adventures with all the old elements that made Tomb Raider great. This Tomb Raider game is the next big venture that the franchise is taking. Although there is no release date, it is being steadily worked on. Amazon Games' vice president Christoph Hartmann described the game as a "huge, huge task".

Tomb Raider is an iconic video game franchise, revolutionary for its impact on the game industry. The franchise's mix of adventures and compelling stories has made it a fan favorite. Lara Croft remains an iconic female character in video game history. Fans have been itching for a new installment to play, and now they won't have to wait any longer.

Tomb Raider's studio history

Tomb Raider has had a turbulent history with video game studios. Core Design, a British video game studio, developed the initial game. Core Design released the first Tomb Raider, which became a commercial success. Toby Gard was a part of that success thanks to his iconic creation; Lara Croft. Gard designed Lara Croft as a strong, confident female character who opposed female stereotypes. He left Core Design in 1997 due to disagreements about Lara Croft being marketed solely by her sex appeal in Tomb Raider II. In addition, Toby felt trapped because he had no creative control over the game he helped create.

The considerable strain on the development team would continue to cause problems. The team was exhausted and forced to put out more installments. Core Design's burnout was most visible during Tomb Raider III, the third chapter in Lara Croft's story. The third game was originally planned to be developed for the next generation of consoles. High consumer demand led to the team developing the game annually. This resulted in overworking and created a loss of passion for the development team.

Angel of Darkness: A developer's tragedy

The franchise's problems became more prominent with the sixth game, Angel of Darkness, released in 2003. Angel of Darkness was planned as the start of a new trilogy. However, Angel of Darkness garnered negative backlash from fans for its incomplete condition. The game had numerous bugs and poor controls that made the game feel clunky. Angel of Darkness was initially meant to be released later, but the game was abruptly rushed to completion. As a result, Angel of Darkness was a critical and commercial failure.

Eidos Interactive would put Crystal Dynamics in charge of the Tomb Raider franchise moving forward. Their first game, Legend, was conceptualized as a revival of the dying Tomb Raider series. Toby Gard was brought back on for his involvement with Lara's character. The purpose of Legend was to design a back-to-basics approach for the franchise and revive interest in Tomb Raider.

Crystal Dynamics: The new owners

In 2006, Legend was released and was well-received by critics, taking Lara back to her roots. Since then, Crystal Dynamics has pushed forward with more adventurous Tomb Raider games. Legend started a trilogy, which continued with 2007's Anniversary and 2008's Underworld. Under Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics rolled out a reboot trilogy with 2013's Tomb Raider, 2015's Rise of The Tomb Raider, and 2018's Shadow of The Tomb Raider.

More Tomb Raider content is still being created for the fans. The original trilogy has been collected and remastered on modern consoles. Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is a Netflix series that will be released on October 10th. Amazon ordered a new live-action series penned by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. This work will debut on their streaming platform, Prime Video. The future looks bright for Tomb Raider as its franchise continues its upward trajectory.
