Max Verstappen: Newey’s Harsh Exit Won’t Hurt Red Bull

Max Verstappen has dismissed Red Bull’s dreary form and Newey’s exit from the team a small agenda saying that it does not affect much. Due to the intensified competition that has lately put pressure on Red Bull and their constructors’ title performance, his utterances are fitting at this time when the team is struggling in the 2024 season.

Still, Verstappen is optimistic Red Bull will remain on the radar, as they scale down operations, especially with one of their engineers leaving the team recently.

Newey’s Exit and Red Bull’s Struggles

Red Bull confirmed in advance of the Miami Grand Prix that Red Bull Aerohead, Adrian Newey, will be stepping down from his role at the start of 2025. Since then Red Bull has struggled to assert its reign again over the constructors’ championship. They enjoy the position of leaders now but they have McLaren breathing down their necks, and the latter are getting more competitive with each race meeting.

The changes seem to have affected Red Bull, especially in their car upgrades in the year 2024. During the recent Zandvoort race, they had to switch to the previous version of their car’s floor in search of remedies for poor performance.

Max Verstappen’s Perspective on Newey’s Departure

When asked at the Italian Grand Prix if Newey’s departure was linked to Red Bull’s poor form, Max Verstappen downplayed the connection, he stated that

Normally not. It’s just, since it was announced that he was leaving, it’s been more difficult. But it shouldn’t matter if someone is, let’s say, leaving on the spot, that immediately the performance drops. Because the car has always been the same. So, yeah, normally not.

Max Verstappen also said he had seen little of Newey recently after the latter relocated his workspace to another area of the Red Bull complex. However, he clarified that both companies are on good terms with each other. He admitted that it wouldn’t be fair to judge the car’s performance solely based on Newey’s departure, he stated;

No. And I think it would also be a bit unfair, to do that, he explained.

Still, Max Verstappen is fully competitive in the drivers’ championship and has a 70-point advantage over Lando Norris. Even though Red Bull trailed McLaren by more than 20 seconds in the last race, the team stands a better chance in the next race to be held in Monza.

Conclusion

The current F1 superstar of Red Bull Max Verstappen also expressed hope in this issue stating that Newey’s absence cannot be the cause of the Red Bull setback. As for difficulties that Red Bull faced in 2024, he said that the team should be able to come back stronger and remain a contender for success as it continues through the following races.
