Khabib Nurmagomedov was set to fight Tony Ferguson at UFC 209, but the fight was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nurmagomedov couldn't make it to the arena because of the restrictions but even after the pandemic, they weren't able to fight because after that Khabib got retired at UFC 254 against Justin Gaethje. Khabib's tough record of 29-0 is still remembered by fans but there were some fights that Nurmagmedov always wanted to happen and that included a fight against Tony Ferguson and FC welterweight king George St-Pierre.

    One Lucky Punch

The fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Ferguson was scheduled a total of five times but it never happened. Both fighter and fans to this day wonders what the outcome be if they fought. Recently Khabib Nurmagomedov appeared on a podcast named 'Inspire Me.' On the podcast, he revealed that as he wanted to fight against Tony, one part of him also wanted to not fight Ferguson and the reason for that is quite simple. The skills.

As we all know Dagistanis are well known for their grappling and wrestling and that's also the reason they win most of their fights. But if you look into the style and moves of Ferguson there is not much grappling and wrestling but the ratio of striking is a lot. Nurmagomedov clarified to the audience that it would've been hard for Ferguson if he hadn't trained his grappling skills and gone against him.

"I feel a little bit sad, but at the same time, I always understand my game is the worst for him. He doesn’t have wrestling. He doesn’t have grappling. What’s he going to do with me? How is he going to stop me? Only chance how he can stop me, it was only a lucky punch."

    Tony Ferguson's Reply

Khabib Nurmagomedov gave respect to the retiring fighter, Tony Ferguson. The time when he lost against Michael Chiesa, he wanted to retire so Khabib had a lot of good words for Ferguson despite their rivalry and sent his best wishes toward Ferguson. Also, now on a podcast with 'Inspire Me', he respectfully said things about Ferguson, but Tony did not reply to that respectfully.

Khabib Nurmagomedov replied to that on Instagram saying that he could've easily dominated Khabib Nurmagomedov. Ferguson wrote on Instagram, "Lucky punch now …was going to leave you alone but ew. Just couldn’t help it. Ya fat f*ck. What a f*cking p*ssy, coward like chicken. Keep hiding Khabieber 29-1."

    Final Thoughts

Trash talking and challenging each other before the fight increases the hype and helps in the promotion of the fight. But after the fight, every fighter should look forward to having good relations with every other fighter. In this case, Ferguson should look forward to having good relations with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
