Gauff, Djokovic Secure Wins In US Open Second Round

Day three of the US Open was electric as defending titleholders Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic cruised into the third round with ease. Coco Gauff swept into the third round comfortably over Germany's Tatjana Maria in the suffocating New York heat, while a hurt opponent retired to send Djokovic into the third round. Other American players, including Gauff and Taylor Fritz, have vastly bettered their chances, ramping up the excitement in Flushing Meadows. With competition at an all-time high, the tournament should be an entertaining one.

Djokovic's Journey Continues

On the men's side, Novak Djokovic resumed his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title. Fellow Serb Laslo Djere had to retire during their match. Djokovic was leading 6-4, 6-4, 2-0 when Djere called it quits due to an injury. It's never great to see a player retire, Djokovic said. Djere has struggled with injuries, and it's not easy to see him go through this.

The win was significant for Djokovic as it constituted his 90th at the US Open, the first man ever to achieve such a feat at all four Grand Slam events. Up next for him will be Australia's Alexei Popyrin, whom he has vanquished twice already this year at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Gauff's Dominant Performance

Defending champion Coco Gauff was in fine fettle as she hosts Germany's Tatjana Maria. It was a fairly quick encounter as Gauff managed to finish it in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. That good performance means she's cruising into the third round, where she faces off against 2019 US Open semifinalist Elina Svitolina. "It was a tricky match said Gauff. She's not the kind of player you can underestimate. It was all about executing my game plan."

It wasn't just Gauff who had a stirring day on Wednesday as, all in all, it was a great day for American players. Also powering his way further forward was No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz, adding to the home hopes of some sort of meaningful display this year. The buzz is electric at Flushing Meadows, with so many Americans forging ahead.

Gauff and Djokovic Move On at US Open

This will be a big test for Coco Gauff because Svitolina has been such a strong player in the past. Gauff will have to maintain the excellence that has brought her into the great position she is in during the tournament. Novak Djokovic's pursuit of a 25th Grand Slam title remains well and truly on course. Up next is a player he has defeated previously, with the Serb desperate to keep his dream run going.
