    Baltimore Ravens’ Backup Quarterback Options

If Lamar Jackson goes down at any time with any sort of injury, the Baltimore Ravens might be in dire straits. Their decision to keep the veteran Josh Johnson is curious, as they put sixth-round pick Devin Leary on their practice squad.

However, with the most recent cuts, the Cleveland Browns let go of Tyler Huntley, the former Raven. While he may get interest from other teams, Baltimore could reunite with the Pro Bowler.

Baltimore Ravens Need to Upgrade At Backup QB

Based on the preseason, one of Baltimore's bigger needs is still at backup quarterback. Johnson might be serviceable even at age 38. However, if the Ravens want to upgrade, they have their shot too after NFL cut day this past week. Huntley, after signing a one-year deal, couldn't beat out Jameis Winston or Dorian Thompson-Robinson this preseason as a backup for the division-rival Cleveland Browns.

The other notable option, not named Huntley, is veteran Ryan Tannehill. However, the 36-year-old could find a starting job if there is an injury in Week 1. The 26-year-old Huntley already has familiarity with the system and has shown past success with the team. Even with the change to Todd Monken's scheme, he still shined at times for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 and is now available.

Tyler Huntley Stats as a Former UDFA Gem

This preseason for the Browns, Tyler Huntley had rough outings in Cleveland, so it made sense that they let him go and preferred their other options to backup Deshaun Watson. He ended his short stint with no passing touchdowns and 2 interceptions. There were trade rumors involving him, Winston, and DTR; but that ended with his release, and is now a free-agent option at quarterback.

For the Baltimore Ravens, he has a career 8 passing touchdowns to 7 interceptions, with 1,957 passing yards (64.6 %) over 4 seasons. Huntley was an undrafted rookie coming out of Utah in 2020 and was good enough to be named as a Pro Bowl alternate in 2023 after subbing in for an injured Jackson. The backup also had 3 career rushing touchdowns and 509 yards on the ground.

Final Thoughts on Their Backup QB Situation

If the Baltimore Ravens want to go on their Super Bowl, they will have to maximize their roster, including their backup depth. While Jackson being 20 pounds lighter could be a good thing, there could always be increased injury risk depending how the amount of designed runs he gets per game. He should be even faster than before, potentially making the carries he does get more meaningful.

With the Derrick Henry signing, the 2x MVP may have less production on the ground and give it more to their All-Pro running back. Even with that said, Jackson has already had injuries in 2021 and 2022, so a backup has to be a priority. The Baltimore Ravens could settle with Johnson, however, the real upgrade is with Tyler Huntley if another team doesn't sign him off the market.
