Dear Red Sox, Pull It Together

In an unfortunate bunt attempt Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays David Hamilton fractured his left index finger, placing him on the 10-day injured list. With a devastating series against Toronto winning only one game out of four the team is falling in the standings for the wildcard race. The hits keep coming for Boston. Will the Red Sox be able to turn around their season just a few games shy of a playoff position?

Red Sox Short on Infield Options

Hamilton, number five in stolen bases in the MLB, and second in the American League he most likely walks away from the rest of the season batting .248. Infamous New England’s Sports Radio Station WEEI reported that an expected recovery timetable for a fractured index finger is usually four to six weeks. If our Red Sox make it to that point Hamilton will most likely be able to return. It has been confirmed that Nick Sogard will be recalled from the WooSox. With just a few days left until roster extension, will Cora look elsewhere for infield support?

26-year-old Nick Sogard, in the last seven games, has averaged a menial .167BA just called up from Triple-A, he will not be one to rely on. Although the recent call-up may be exactly what the Red Sox clubhouse wants, let’s not hold our breath on this one. Red Sox need Raphel Devers back before they open a new series in Detroit, as it is hopeful he will be there and ready to play.

The Red Sox also have gotten smothered by Toronto in their latest series at Fenway. Brayan Bello had maybe his best game of his career last night but it will go unseen due to the lack of shared team responsibility. The Red Sox bullpen has an overall ranking that would make any clubhouse cringe standing at 25 out of 30 MLB teams in ERA standings, things are looking bleak for our home team.

In August, when one player is hot that night the rest of the Red Sox cool down. They cannot find their congruency this season but things aren’t over yet. We hope. With the roster extension right around the corner and some positions to replace thanks to recent injuries, the Red Sox may make a move here towards the wildcard. They certainly have surprised us in the past, but we can’t expect Sogard to make huge impacts with Hamilton out and his recent move up to Fenway. This most recent injury is a bad blow to Boston. We could only hope that the clubhouse makes drastic out-of-the-box decisions to save the season for the Red Sox.

    Looking Unsupportive In Boston

John Henry has spent most of his time and little of his money growing the Red Sox with young blood in their farm system. According to the last Bleacher Report, Henry’s decision to not sign any superstar players while he had the chance, has kept salary caps low but put the team in a less-than-ideal situation this season, last season, and the season before.

The Red Sox are ranked 19 out of 30 MLB Minor League teams examining variables like potential, talent, and depth. Truly struggling to find consistency in their play as a clubhouse overall. Proving Alex Cora’s job near impossible walking into September. Rather terrible baseball at this point Boston with some sprinklings of hope here and there, but they lessen as we turn into September. With Romy Gonzalez (3B) in the depths of his first season, Mickey Gasper (2B) and Triston Cassas (1B) need to find solid support in the infield.

There is still a chance Krisitan Campbell is on the radar for September roster extensions. As he smashes his first seven games as a WooSox, with 29 at-bats he stands at a .345 batting average since moving up just this month. Campbell is a solid contender this September to a crumbling Red Sox clubhouse, despite his lack of experience. Let us rely on what we know: We are losing with the lineup we have now. We are getting crushed at home this season. The trade deadline is over and the Red Sox failed to acquire enough momentum during that time to change things for August.

Where else is there to look? Let’s look at the “Young Barry Bonds”, let’s look at the fact Campbell is versatile, willing, and able. Let’s consider how Campbell beating the Big 3 to Fenway may impact this season in ways that may suit our wildest dreams. Cora and the Red Sox need to consider all of their options and Campbell is not one to turn your cheek to this season. His contact hitting, power and young confidence could be just what the Sox need to refresh, reset, and step into September on an upswing.

    Pull It Together Sox

To get involved with the Red Sox clubhouse this season is like going to an Italian restaurant outside of the North End, there are a few solid dishes, mostly over-promising new specials with minimal delivery, the staff is quite fickle, and you’re in an inauthentic atmosphere. Cora needs to turn this season around by ensuring the lineup is cohesive. Be the glue, Cora, please, and light the fire for them to win on the road in the next two series before it’s too late. Will the Red Sox turn it around for Boston or will they crumble under what is left of the summer heat?
