3 Powerful Box Office Flops That Won Our Hearts

Every once in a while, a movie is released at the wrong time in front of the wrong audience. However, the films aged like fine wine, finding success after their initial box office release, and some of them may shock you. Here’s everything you need to know about how these films’ failures turned them into massive successes later on.

    Treasure Planet

The film Treasure Planet follows a young 15-year-old boy named Jim Hawkins when he stumbles upon a map of the greatest treasure of all time. The film was an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, following the same journey. The 2002 Family Adventure movie hit the theaters only making $109 million at the box office when their budget was upwards of $140 million. However, despite the loss of money at the box office, the film has continued to be many people’s favorite animation film for decades. If you haven’t seen it, make sure you give it a shot. Treasure Planet streams on Disney+.

    Iron Giant

Another film that has outlived its poor box office performance is none other than The Iron Giant, directed by Brad Bird. The film was released in 1999 as an adaptation of Ted Hughes’s The Iron Man. The Sci-Fi family animation follows a young boy by the name of Hogarth when a giant alien robot crashes into a small town. The film takes place in 1957 and explores themes of humanity and love. The Iron Giant team set off on a quest to create an amazing film with $50 million as their budget. Unfortunately, the film only made a little above $30 million worldwide after release.

Some say it was partly due to the failure of Quest for Camelot in the prior year. The failure of the movie did not stop its legacy, for The Iron Giant remains a core memory for many who had seen it as children in the early 2000s.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Nobody can argue that Gene Wilder’s performance in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory wasn’t iconic. To this day, Wilder’s performance is said to be the best, even in comparison to the great Johnny Depp or Timothee Chalamet. The film was released in 1971 and was created on a small budget of $2.9 million. The film made its money back at the box office, accumulating $4 million worldwide, but didn’t meet the expectations that the producers had initially. After time had passed, the film had found a new audience and success around the world. Establishing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as an all-time classic.

    Box Office Flops Final Thoughts

The world of movies is always unpredictable, no matter how much studio executives think they can control it. Every year, billions of dollars are spent within the industry, and that money isn’t always made back during the initial release. Films take a while to form loyal audiences in some cases. Making some initial flops a classic with enough patience like Treasure Planet, Iron Giant, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, achieved.
