Pittsburgh Penguins: Game Time Announced For Season Opener Against the New York Rangers

The NHL announced the scheduled release for the 2024 season. The season begins on October 8, but the Pittsburgh Penguins will start the 2024 season on October 9 at home against the New York Rangers. Pittsburgh has missed the playoffs for the last two seasons. As for New York, they went to the Eastern Conference Finals last season before losing to the Florida Panthers in six games. The Pittsburgh Penguins have not won it all since the 2016-2017 season. The New York Rangers have not won it all since the 1993-1994 season.

Pittsburgh’s first game this season against New York will be televised on TNT and it will be at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be played at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This will be a part of a TNT doubleheader that night. The other game that will be on TNT that night will be the Colorado Avalanche and the Vegas Golden Knights. This will be one of several games this season that the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers are on national broadcasts.

There will be a lot of spotlight on both the Rangers and the Penguins entering the 2024-2025 season. New York will be under the microscope all season long because of their recent postseason failures. Chris Kreider, Artemi Panarin, and Mika Zibanejad are their best offensive players. Adam Fox is the best blue liner on the Rangers. Pittsburgh fans do not like Rangers captain Jacob Trouba because of what happened during the 2022 postseason when he injured Sidney Crosby. The hit was dirty and he used his elbow to hit Crosby’s head.

There is no doubt Penguins fans will boo Trouba once again this season. However, the best player on the New York Rangers roster is goalie Igor Shesterkin. Shesterkin is one of the best goalies in the NHL entering the 2024-2025 season. As for the Pittsburgh Penguins goalie situation, it is not ideal that Tristan Jarry will be the starter. Alex Nedeljkovic was the primary starting goalie down the stretch last season for Pittsburgh. The blueline was also a concern for the team a season ago.

Another storyline to watch for between the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins is the head coaches. Peter Laviolette will be entering his second season as the Rangers head coach. Mike Sullivan has been the Penguins head coach since the middle of the 2015-2016 season. Both teams will be under pressure to get back to the playoffs this season and win a Stanley Cup Title. Sidney Crosby is entering the final year of his contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The core of Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang need to get one more shot at winning it all.
