Disney+ Deceptive Thriller “The Tyrant” Gains Momentum

South Korean spy-thriller The Tyrant has paved its way, becoming a refreshing, thrilling action series that surely does not disappoint. Millions have been intrigued by its sophisticated trailer, and the series matched its hype after its release on August 14. Unsurprisingly, it became Disney+’s most-watched series in South Korea and gained favorable reviews worldwide.

The Tyrant’s Plot

US intelligence discovered a secret South Korean government-backed bioweapon project to enhance human abilities. The so-called Tyrant Program developed a drug that can develop the superhuman gene. The US intelligence asked the SK government to shut the program down and surrender the samples. However, during the handover, the bioweapon was stolen.

Agents from both countries embark on a dangerous mission to recover the lost bioweapon. Two forces oppose each other, one seeking to destroy and one seeking to protect—all fighting to ensure that The Tyrant doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. Will they be able to save the world?

Cast

True Beauty star Joo Yoon-Su stars as the skilled engineer and infiltrator Chae Jag-yeong, whose mission is to steal the last sample of the bio-enhancing project from the Tyrant Program. Cha Seoung-won plays the role of former agent Lim Sang, whose mission is to deal with forces attached to the program.

This series also marked the return to television of beloved actor Kim Seon-Ho. He plays the mysterious Director Choi, who leads The Tyrant Program. Kim Kang-Woo completes the series, portraying Paul, an overseas intelligence agency member keen to eliminate bioweapons.

Chart-Topping Success

Walt Disney Company Korea announced on August 30 that The Tyrant ranked first and became the most-watched series on Disney+ Korea. After its premiere on Hulu, the series also gained a 92% Approval Rate from Rotten Tomatoes and a favorable score of 7.0 on IMDb. Director Park Hoon-Jung was praised for his unique worldview and for fostering strong characters. His masterpiece joins Disney+’s best KDrama series, such as “Moving,” “The Worst of Evil,“ and “Vigilante.“ The series also joins director Park’s successful works such as “New World“ and “The Witch.“

Final Thoughts

Did you know that The Tyrant was supposed to be a movie? Director Park felt it might feel too rushed, so it became a four-episode series. The following format did better justice to its characters and the story. The immersive series, unpredictable to its end, has drawn favorable reviews from critics and viewers alike. The Tyrant Season 1 is available on HULU for US audiences and Disney+ for other countries. The series remains at the top of Disney+’s most-watched series chart in South Korea and the top 5 in other countries. Currently, there are no details about whether there will be a second season.
