New York Mets Begin Critical 3-Game Series Tonight

The New York Mets begin a three-game series tonight on the road against the Chicago White Sox. New York is riding high after taking two of three games on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks. New York needed late-game heroics in the top of the ninth inning yesterday from Jose Iglesias to secure the series victory. First Baseman Pete Alonso is swinging a hot bat as well as he hit two home runs in the Arizona series.

Luckily for the New York Mets, the 2024 Chicago White Sox are one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball history. They are an anemic 31-104 this year and have won only four games since the MLB all-star break. Will the New York Mets be able to take advantage of the White Sox in this series?

New York Mets Look To Climb Up Wild Card Standings

New York(70-64) is three games back of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. Their playoff chances are only 18.9% according to FanGraphs. A successful series this weekend will help New York improve their status in the wild card picture. The Atlanta Braves are the team the Mets will have to chase down in the final 28 games of the regular season.

New York and Atlanta are 5-5 against one another this season and only play each other three more times(September 24-26) in 2024. The Mets are running out of time to chase down their hated rival for the final spot in the 2024 MLB Playoffs.

Looking Ahead To Tonight's Game

The offense of the New York Mets, as has been the case throughout the 2024 season, will have to lead the team to victory. New York scored 19 runs in their three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks including eight runs in each of the first two games of the series. New York's offense should be licking its chops as Chicago's pitching staff has the second-worst ERA in the league at 4.86.

The New York Mets send Tylor Megill(2-5, 5.17 ERA) to the mound. He will be opposed by Jonathan Cannon(2-8, 4.47 ERA). With both starting pitchers having such a high ERA, tonight's contest in "The Windy City" could be a high-scoring one. Megill started 2024 well but has sputtered in July and August. Cannon is coming off a terrible start against the Detroit Tigers where he surrendered five earned runs over four innings of work. With the playoff chances of the New York Mets so low, they need to flex their muscle against one of the league's worst teams if they want to have a September chalked full of meaningful baseball.
