New York Yankees Coming Off Series Loss To Washington Nationals

The New York Yankees, coming off a series loss to the Washington Nationals, come home for a short homestand against the St. Louis Cardinals, starting Friday. With two day games, Saturday and Sunday, the New York Yankees look to right the ship and regain their offensive groove following a series loss to the 61-73 Nationals in DC that saw the team score only nine runs in three games. To the pitching staff’s credit, Yankee hurlers allowed just 11 runs but didn’t receive their customary run support. Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton combined to go 4-of-34 with just one RBI.

Juan Soto's Return to Nationals' Park

Perhaps the highlight of the otherwise disappointing series for the New York Yankees was the standing ovation Washington fans gave Juan Soto during his first plate appearance in the first inning of game one. Soto came up in the Nationals’ organization and was a member of the 2019 World Series-winning team.

That team included Trea Turner, now with the Philadelphia Phillies, along with Bryce Harper who left Washington in free agency, Anthony Rendon, now with the Los Angeles Angels, and Victor Robles, now of the Seattle Mariners. The pitching staff featured Stephen Strasburg in his last great season and, of course, future Hall of Famer, Max Scherzer.

Juan Soto Hints At Leaving New York Yankees

Soto spoke fondly of his time in D.C. While Soto stated, “Right now, I’m playing for the Yankees. I’m happy here where I’m at. And we’ll see what happens in free agency.” The hint of ambiguity was enough to inspire Washington Post sportswriter Barry Svriluga to author a column entitled The Next Step in the Nationals Rebuild: Bring Back Juan Soto.

Before New York Yankees fans everywhere sink into a full-scale panic meltdown, Svriluga told Tony Kornheiser on ESPN that he saw the odds of Soto returning to the Nationals as low given ownership’s reticence to spend big dollars. It is crystal clear that Soto will command north of $400M in the offseason and the Yankees competition will likely only seriously consist of the cross-town rival New York Mets, but the Nationals angle is something to pay attention to.

Focus on the St. Louis Cardinals

With just a one game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East, the New York Yankees need to focus their collective energy not on what might happen in the offseason and direct it to the St. Louis Cardinals. Marcus Stroman, Will Warren, and Nestor Cortes will start for the Yankees this weekend against the Red Birds. Perhaps over the weekend, the funk of DC will get shaken off and the New York Yankees lineup will flash some pop.
