The Buffalo Bills announced their initial 2024 practice squad which includes some fan favorites. The team has filled sixteen of their practice squad spaces with one more open due to a unique rule. The practice squad is filled with captivating surprises.

Most of the players selected to the practice squad were players released by the Bills as part of the NFL roster cuts. Teams were required to cut down from ninety players to 53 players by 4 P.M. Tuesday. This is the first season in which teams do not have to make cuts until after the final preseason game is completed. The intriguing part about the players selected to the practice squad is that one is the son of a former NFL legend and another is a fifteen year veteran.

Get To Know The Practice Squad

Safety Kareem Jackson is a former first round pick by the Houston Texans. In the later half of his career, Jackson converted from cornerback to safety with the Denver Broncos. He is known by many peers around the league for playing to the edge or just across the line of the NFL rules. In 2023, he was suspended for two separate hits, one on TE Luke Musgrave and the other on QB Joshua Dobbs.

Jackson was suspended a total of six games while also losing a total of nearly one million dollars between salary and fines. Keep in mind, that your best ability is your availability, and costing your team yardage can get you a reputation for being a selfish player. Having a fifteen year veteran on your practice squad is important, especially after losing out on key contributors Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer.

After having outstanding preseason showcases, practice squad TE Zach Davidson and WR Tyrell Shavers both made the practice squad. Both players had long roads to making the roster, but with injuries to WR Chase Claypool and TE Quintin Morris, there was a glimpse of hope for either to make the roster.

Frank Gore Jr. Makes 2024 Practice Squad

Many Bills fans were holding their breath for the announcement of the waiver claims from around the NFL. When it was announced that zero members of the Buffalo Bills were claimed, many wondered whether or not RB Frank Gore Jr. would become a member of the team's practice squad. After a breakout performance in which Gore Jr. ran for over 100 yards against the Carolina Panthers, the team saw enough to hand one of their practice squad spaces to him.

Gore Jr. is the son of former San Francisco 49ers legend Frank Gore. Playing for the 49ers, Colts, Dolphins, Bills, and Jets, Gore had a sixteen year NFL career and is currently third all-time with 16,000 rushing yards. He is eligible for the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026. The elder Gore, who played with the Buffalo Bills in 2019, was on hand to watch his son play in the final preseason game. A historical father-son moment can happen in 2024 if and when Josh Allen hands off the ball to Frank Gore Jr. having already handed the ball off to Frank Gore Sr.

    Unique Rule

The Buffalo Bills were able to use a unique rule to stash an impressive player on their practice squad. Former Syracuse Orange DE Kingsley Jonathan was granted an exemption from the Bills practice squad due to the NFL's International Player Pathway Program (IPPP). Teams are allowed to carry a maximum of sixteen players on their practice squad plus one IPPP.

Due to OT Travis Clayton being placed on season-ending injured reserve, the Bills decided that the former Orange standout would be their IPP selection. The Bills revamped their defensive end room with the additions of Casey Toohill and 2024 fifth round pick Javon Solomon. With a three-headed tandem including future Hall of Famer Von Miller, the Bills defense is looking to help lead the franchise to their fifth straight AFC East title.

    Final Thoughts On Initial Roster

Former Lancaster High School and University of Buffalo alum LB Joe Andreeson has made the initial 53-man roster for the Buffalo Bills. Andreesen had twelve tackles in a week 2 preseason game against the Steelers. Before the first preseason game, most expected the former Bull to make the practice squad, but with multiple injuries to the linebacking room, the Bills chose to keep Andreesen on their roster.

When you look at the initial practice squad of the Buffalo Bills, you have to give credit to GM Brandon Beane for putting out the best product possible for the 2024 season. While there may be initial changes, those should be few and minor. Bills fans should be ecstatic as they jump through their flaming tables knowing that the Buffalo Bills practice squad is well prepared to be the "next man up."
