Tigers Rally Late, Fall to Red Sox 7-5 in Extra Innings

After riding the good vibes of a six-game winning streak, the Tigers have fallen on hard times over the past couple of days. After falling to the Angels 3-0 on Thursday afternoon, they rallied late to tie the game in their series opener against the Red Sox, only to fall 7-5 in 10 innings.

Fortunately, Tarik Skubal is set to take the mound on Saturday, and as we all know momentum is only as good as your next day’s starting pitcher. Expect the Tigers to start a new streak on Saturday.

    Bats Wake Late for Tigers

After being shut out by Jack Kochanowicz and the Angels on Thursday, the Tigers couldn’t scratch out a single run against Tanner Houck and company through the first seven innings on Friday night. That all changed in the eighth though as Andy Ibanez worked a walk off of Brennan Bernardino and Matt Vierling added a one-out single to put two men on base. Kerry Capenter then strolled to the dish – lefty on lefty – and clobbered an opposite-field 386-foot three-run blast that trimmed the Tigers’ deficit to one run at 4-3.

Their rally continued in the ninth inning, as Zach McKinstry smacked a leadoff single into right field off of Red Sox’ closer Kenley Jansen. He then swiped second base and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Jake Rogers to tie the game. All the Tigers needed was another hit to put the game in the win column, but Ibanez lined out to center field and Riley Greene went down swinging to end the inning.

    Late Rally Falls Short

Unfortunately, it was the Red Sox who went to work in the 10th inning as Ceddanne Rafaela walloped a 2-2 fastball from Shelby Miller for a go-ahead solo home run that gave the Red Sox a 6-4 lead. Jarren Duran followed by pulverizing the very next pitch for a mammoth 431-foot homer to right field that made it 7-4.

The Tigers did manage to scratch out a run in their half of the 10th inning as Carpenter plated Greene with an RBI ground out.

Casey Mize started the game for the Tigers and pitched decently in his first start back from the 60-day injured list – allowing four runs on six hits across his six innings of work.

The right-hander punched out four batters on the evening while issuing one free pass. The Red Sox scratched out single runs against him in every inning except the second and the fifth, the final of which came on a solo blast off the bat of Connor Wong with two outs in the sixth inning. The 27-year-old hurler generated nine swings and misses on 85 pitches on the night — four of those on his fastball which averaged 93.9 mph in the start — while posting a CSW (called strikes +whiffs) of 32 percent. He'll carry a 2-6 record, 4.36 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and a 62/22 K/BB ratio (84 2/3 innings) into Thursday's matchup against the Padres in San Diego.

    News and Notes

To free up a spot for Mize on the club’s 40-man roster, left-hander Joey Wentz was designated for assignment prior to Friday’s game.

Justyn-Henry Malloy is expected to rejoin the big-league roster when rosters expand on Sunday.
