    Firepit Fundamentals: Easy DIY Projects

Who doesn't love sitting around a firepit in the backyard roasting marshmallows or just enjoying the outdoors? Sure, you could dig a hole in the ground and throw some wood in there, but the ambiance isn't quite the same as it is if you take the time to make a nice circle of stones around where the fire will go.

Having an established location for burning stuff outside as an actual firepit helps give the area a more homely feeling as well. This is yet another reason to build a firepit rather than just choosing a random location in your backyard and setting up a makeshift fire there. Better still, building a DIY firepit is very easy. Even if you don't want to do a lot, you can easily set one up in an hour or two, provided you have a few required materials.

    Firepit Types: Choosing What Fits

When people mention that firepits are easy to make, they're primarily referring to the two simplest kinds: a hole in the ground with some stones around it or a circle of stones that surround the fire. There are a few other types, but they're a little more complicated to set up or quite infeasible to DIY. These types are gas-powered firepits that use propane or natural gas rather than wood and portable firepits, which are almost exclusively store-bought units and not a DIY option for most people.

The only differences between the easier types is whether or not you dig a hole and whether you want to use the ground or the stones around the pit to contain your fires. Also, it's worth considering that a dug-out pit will give you more space for the wood. If you decide you want to go big with the fire, a dug-out pit will be a viable option for you, far more so than if you are merely surrounding a pile of wood with fire-resistant stones.

    Planning Your Firepit Project

When planning to build a fire pit, you must consider several factors to ensure success. The most important ones are the build's location and the planned size and shape of the firepit. The ideal order of decision here is to choose the location first and then decide how big to make the fire pit, as the location will determine how much space is available for the fire pit.

The pit should be positioned to minimize smoke blowing in the direction of your planned seating or home, which will allow you to enjoy the firepit without smoke getting in your face. The size and shape of the pit are more of a personal preference, although both will determine how big you can make your fires and how much wood you can burn simultaneously.

    Final Thoughts

Building a firepit can be remarkably easy if you pick the right type. It doesn't have to be a long, convoluted process or require professionals. If you are willing to settle for the simplest type of firepit and pick an appropriate location, you can make one in under an hour with a shovel and some rocks. While several other types of fire pits are more demanding and arguably easier to use, a simple hole in the ground surrounded by stones does the job perfectly fine, provided the location is carefully chosen to avoid smoke drift.
