Indiana Jones Won't be Xbox Exclusive in 2024

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will not be an Xbox exclusive for 2024. Professor Jones is going to be set up for a multiplatform release. Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, initially said that Indiana Jones would not be ported. Fans believed this meant neither game was going to be available on other consoles. However, what Spencer meant was that neither game was going to be a part of the initial wave of releases.

The initial wave of Xbox exclusives was unveiled on February 21. The list consisted of at least four games, and the opportunity to create more if needed. These games will be ported to both the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox's rival, the PlayStation 5. The games include Pentiment, Grounded, Sea of Thieves, and the commercial success, Hi-Fi Rush. In addition, we can now add Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to the list.

    Microsoft's Decision to Port Games

Microsoft's list of popular exclusives includes various titles such as Halo Infinite and Forza. Microsoft choosing to port over their exclusives comes from a shift in the company's strategy. Locking the games down to being a 'console exclusive' is going to limit the audience's accessibility.

By porting their games over, Microsoft is not only reaching a wider audience but is also opening up revenue streams. This offers Microsoft an opportunity to profit from their games using outside consoles. Overall, this makes the games tangible to other players and can guarantee viability.

Indiana Jones' History with Video Games

Indiana Jones has been absent from video game titles for quite some time. Indy's first venture into video games was through 1981's Raider of the Last Ark. This video game was an adaptation of the film and was playable on the Atari 2600. Interestingly enough, it was created by Atari developer Howard Scott Warshaw. Warshaw helped create E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, which is one of one of the most reviled video games in gaming history.

Now, Indiana Jones is making his big return to video games after fifteen years. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a multiplatform first-person adventure that puts Indiana Jones between the events of Raiders of The Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.

The game will include stealth segments, and playable puzzle segments, as expected of the character. The story focuses on Indiana Jones fighting against various groups to protect the 'Great Circle'. The game is slated for release on December 9th, and the PlayStation port has been confirmed, but it will be released either in the first or second quarter of 2025.

    Microsoft's Renegotiated Deal with Disney

Indiana Jones was previously assumed to not be a part of the ported-over titles. However, what the FTC has revealed is that it was always going to be multiplatform. In 2022, Microsoft had plans to acquire Activision Blizzard, which raised antitrust concerns within the United States. This prompted the Federal Trade Commission to take legal action, which wanted to veto Microsoft from acquiring Blizzard Studios.

During the grueling legal battle, Bethesda's Pete Hines revealed that their new Indiana Jones game would be available on PC and Xbox. The FTC revealed that the actual deal Microsoft had was that the Indiana Jones game was going to be available on all platforms. Microsoft renegotiated the deal to turn the Indiana Jones game into an Xbox exclusive.

Xbox Porting Over Exclusives is Good

Microsoft wants to ensure that their games are available across the market. Previously, Microsoft kept their games as Xbox exclusives, which limited their visibility. This shows a willingness to adapt to the changing landscape in the video game industry. Making these games more accessible not only gets them played more, but it offers them potential profitability.

Microsoft has an open catalog filled with numerous video game exclusives. This decision has opened the floodgates for those fan-favorite exclusives being released on other consoles. This has allowed gamer audiences to hope for their favorite titles to be available on alternative platforms.
