There are many common types of trees across the United States of America. They decorate the landscape with colorful foliage, grouping to form massive forests. Besides producing oxygen and food, they fight erosion and enrich the soil with fallen leaves. However, what makes them familiar is they are not rooted in singular locations. They are everywhere, from California to New Jersey, and growing in any environment.

    Marvelous Maples and Other Hardwoods

Some of the most common types of trees are maples. The red maple is one form of the maple tree. Originating from the eastern U.S., this species lives in different climates, habitats, and areas. It produces many seeds and is renowned for its constant red leaves. Another common yet popular species of maple is the well-known sugar maple. The pillar of the maple syrup industry, it is beloved for its iconic autumn colors. Its brightly-colored wood also makes it a prime choice for flooring and furniture.

Other common types of trees are hardwoods, including the quaking aspen and the flowering dogwood. The quaking aspen, the state tree of Utah, possesses the highest range of any tree. Its reproduction process involves budding sprouts from its roots, growing into colonies of clones. The flowering dogwood is common in eastern North American forests and popular in urban landscapes. It sprouts red berries that attract birds and grows well in acidic soil. This species is small in stature but blooms early in Spring and provides excellent shade.

    Adaptive Oaks and Fast-Spreading Gums

More common types of trees include oaks that can live almost anywhere. The white oak can live in various locales ranging from mountains to watery flat lands. This species can live up to 300 years and grow 100 feet high. Indigenous to the mid west and east, the pin oak is common in New York City. It is a popular choice for landscaping due to its pyramidal shape. This species can survive droughts, grow from poor soil, and be easily transplanted.

Common types of trees in the United States even include gum trees. Typically found in swamps, the black tupelo has an average growth rate and can live for many years. This species is found in forests but can colonize fields and meadows quickly. The American sweetgum can take over abandoned fields and unkempt forests. Due to its leaves and fruit, this species is not part of the gum family.

    Thriving Firs and Persistent Pines

Firs are on the list of common types of trees found throughout the U.S. Balsam fir thrives in swamps, as it can grow in moist and acidic soils. It also grows best in colder locations such as mountains. The Douglas-fir, the state tree of Oregon, can grow in different areas. Like the balsam fir, it prefers acidic soils, except it grows along the coast. Douglas-fir also comes in many varieties, like the coastal Douglas-fir and the Rocky Mountain Douglas-fir.

Pines, found typically in the north, are common types of trees. The lodgepole pine grows in the mountains of the Cascades and Sierra Nevada. This species has a slow to medium growth rate and can thrive in various soils. The loblolly pine is a fast-growing species of pine that spreads from New Jersey to Texas. It is also a food source and ideal shelter for birds, squirrels, and chipmunks.

Astounding Ashes and Delicious Nut Growers

Ash trees also belong to the common types of trees in the United States. Green ash, which is the most widely distributed ash species, is capable of withstanding extreme climates. It can produce many seeds that are a food source for local wildlife. The White ash is similar in appearance to the Green, making identification difficult. It is widely grown as an ornamental tree for its leaves, which possess blueish-white undersides.

The roster of common types of trees even includes those that grow nuts. A part of the hickory family, pecan is an excellent multipurpose tree. It produces a delicious nut used mainly in pies and is visually pleasing in landscapes. Black walnut is another species of hickory tree, like pecan. The species is valued not only for its tasty nuts but also for its wood.
