Grigor Dimitrov Credits Serena Williams For Helping Him Win

World No. 9 Grigor Dimitrov has finally returned to the US Open quarterfinal for the first time in five years. Dimitrov secured a spot in the Round of 8 after beating Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6(3), 2-6 3,-6 6-3. Grigor Dimitrov admitted that his good friend, Serena Williams, has helped him win.

Serena Williams has been back at the US Open as a spectator, two years after retiring at her home tournament. She watched Jannik Sinner and Jessica Pegula win their matches on Saturday. Then, she was back again in the crowd alongside Alicia Keys to watch Grigor Dimitrov on the next day.

A Quick Signal From Grigor Dimitrov To Serena

Grigor Dimitrov had a tremendous result after winning a three-hour and 39-minute match against Andrey Rublev. Dimitrov stormed into a two-set lead but he was dragged into a decider when he attempted to mount a comeback for the second time this fortnight. It’s his best US Open result since 2019 - when the Bulgarian upset Roger Federer to book a spot at the semifinal.

During his on-court interview, Grigor Dimitrov was asked whether he was nervous playing in front of Serena Williams. He admitted that it was more the other way around. The 33-year-old Dimitrov stated that Serena Williams contributed to his win. “She gave me a good pep talk yesterday,” he said. Grigor Dimitrov even continued to look up to Williams in the crowd after the match. He gave her another wave, signaling to meet after he got off court.

Not Only Grigor Dimitrov Felt The Luck From Serena

American men’s single star, Frances Tiafoe felt the same luck as Grigor Dimitrov did. Tiafoe produced a convincing 6-4, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 win over Australian Alexei Popyrin to set up a clash against Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. Tiafoe admitted he got his best result after the surprise visit from 23-time major winner Serena Williams.

“It was really cool to have her want to talk to me before a match and really say she wants me to do this thing and that I’m capable of doing it. I don’t think it will hit me like that if anybody else said it to me," Tiafoe said. He admitted that Serena Williams’ strong words gave him high motivation to give his best tennis at Flushing Meadows. “It's coming from her, I mean, it's just so loud.”

Tiafoe's victory over his Australian counterpart came after a five-set slugfest against Ben Shelton in the third round. The win secured a quarterfinal spot to take on Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday. Williams may be torn on who to cheer for when Tiafoe and Dimitrov meet in the next stage.

Another Hard Test for Grigor Dimitrov

Grigor Dimitrov might need a lot of pep talks with Serena Williams in this second week of the US Open. If he can pass through Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinal, he could possibly meet American star Taylor Fritz in the semifinal. Taylor Fritz is having his own test from No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinal.

Before coming to Flushing Meadows, Grigor Dimitrov had an injury problem since Wimbledon, but he seems to be in good condition to move further into the quarterfinals. Dimitrov admitted that his body started to lose its rhythm in the match against Andrey Rublev. “I just had to stay patient and I think today the biggest thing that helped me was my experiences and [the crowd],” Dimitrov said. Well, he will need another boost when he meets the home star Tiafoe.
