Gerrit Cole Powers New York Yankees To Win

Gerrit Cole took the mound Monday night against the Texas Rangers and did what stoppers do. He stopped the two-game skid the team was on to stay slightly ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. The New York Yankees ace pitched six innings, giving up four hits, one run and striking out nine.

The New York Yankee bats easily outpaced the pitching staff’s four runs allowed by slugging their way to eight runs, fueled by both Second Baseman Gleyber Torres and the recently returning Anthony Rizzo at first base. Each drove in two runs while combining to go 4-of-9 at the plate. Will the New York Yankees be able to keep this momentum going?

A Must Win For The Yankees

The New York Yankees have to take care of business on this road trip with the Orioles playing the historically inept Chicago White Sox to start the week. The Orioles plated 13 in a 13-3 drubbing of the woeful White Sox, who fell to an almost unfathomable 31-108. Whoever it was who coined the saying "You win 54 and you lose 54 and it’s what you do with the other 54" in a normal baseball season never imagined the 2024 Chicago White Sox. The Orioles are almost guaranteed a sweep to start the week and to hold on to their half-game lead the Yankees have to hold serve.

Gerrit Cole Has Been Worth the Money

Gerrit Cole has proven to be worth every penny of the $324 million contract he signed for nine years back in 2020. Over his tenure with the Yankees, Cole is 57-26 with a 3.13 ERA. Just last season he won the AL Cy Young Award with a league-leading 2.63 ERA. He also led the league in innings pitched with 209 while striking out 222 hitters.

He spent much of the early season on the IL, but his 2024 campaign has quickly rounded into late-season form. Cole is currently 6-3 in 13 starts with a 3.65 ERA and 78 K in 66 innings. He won’t be winning a Cy Young this season but Cole can go a long way toward pushing the Yankees over the finish line in 2024. With only 24 games left in the regular season, the New York Yankees will need to continue playing well heading into October baseball.

Cole will be a critical part of a New York Yankees team that has their sights set on winning its first World Series title since 2009. They have one of the best rosters in Major League Baseball and will enter the 2024 MLB Playoffs with championship aspirations.
