St. Louis Blues Announce Krug Out For 2024-2025 Season

The St. Louis Blues and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced that Torey Krug will miss the 2024-2025 NHL season and undergo ankle surgery. The decision was made to help Krug with pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle. The decision to undergo surgery was reached following an effort to rehabilitate the injury through non-surgical interventions.

The St. Louis Blues signed Krug in October 2020 as a free agent from the Boston Bruins. Krug, 33, is entering the fifth season of a seven-year, $45.5 million deal. The deal was signed before the 2020-21 campaign. The St. Louis Blues will begin their season against the Seattle Kraken on October 8, 2024.

St. Louis Blues Without Torey Krug For 2024-2025 Season

Torey Krug will miss the entire NHL season this year and undergo season-ending surgery to help his pre-arthritic ankle. In the four seasons with the Blues, Krug recorded 22 goals, 124 assists and 146 points, 154 penalty minutes in 255 regular-season games. Over his career he has appeared in 778 regular season games, with Boston and St. Louis, totaling 483 points (89 goals, 394 assists) and 374 penalty minutes. Krug was a key factor in the St. Louis Blues power play. He will be missed quarterbacking the powerplay with his shot from the point.

The St. Louis Blues originally announced the problem in the left ankle in July but said that if Krug could not rehabilitate the ankle without surgery then surgery would not be necessary. Krug's ankle did not progress and now Krug faces surgery and missing the NHL season. This injury has occurred over the seasons of playing in the NHL with suffering bone fractures. Krug has missed time throughout being with the Blues with injuries and played 77 games out of 82 last season.

Team Looks To Overcome Key Loss

Since Krug is missing the NHL season the St. Louis Blues have signed Ryan Suter, Pierre-Oliver Joseph and added Philip Bromberg from the Oilers to one-way contracts. The Blues tried to trade Krug to the Philadelphia Flyers in 2023 but deals were never made and he ended up back in St. Louis. Now, that Krug needs surgery, it is not guaranteed the 33-year-old will be able to come back from this for the 2025-2026 season.

Krug does have two more years from St. Louis but things can change for him in the future whether he ends his NHL career or the Blues try to trade him again. Krug mentioned,

"I think I want to be part of this room, love playing for this city and wearing the Bluenote. It's something I'm very excited about. ... I have kids, I have a family, a lot of things to think about, but at the end of the day, like I said, I want to be here and wear the Note. We have a great locker room here, a great feeling in the room this year. I think we can turn it around quick."
