Directed by Pablo Larrain, who is most well known for directing 2016's Jackie about former First Lady Jackie Kennedy, the film Maria follows the final days of Maria Callas' life. Maria's life was marred by controversy when her long-time relationship ended with Aristotle Onassis, who left her to marry widowed Jackie Kennedy. Very saddened by this unexpected turn of events, Callas spent the rest of her life in isolation, ultimately passing away at age 53 from a heart attack.

Although Maria isn't set for wide release until February 6, 2025, it's currently making the circuits for film festivals. It's already been reported to have amazing reception: at the Telluride Film Festival, it's reported to have received a standing ovation. Of course, this is just early reception, so it should be taken with a grain of salt; however, it's been a pretty consistent trend that films that receive a positive film festival critical review will do well once Oscar season rolls around.
It's great to see that Angelina Jolie is making a run for an Oscar too. While she has won an Oscar for acting before, her acting career is unfortunately largely overshadowed by the breakdown of her very public relationship with Brad Pitt and her less artistic roles. Her stunning looks have earned her some acclaim, but it's nice to see her acting getting more recognition again. Her previous nominations and win are well deserved, but she has taken a backseat since that 2009 nomination. The role of Maria Callas really changes that for her.
