Why the Switch Absolutely Needs Twilight Princess HD in 2024

Twilight Princess HD was released for the Wii U in 2016, a spectacular remake of 2006's Twilight Princess. It added quality-of-life updates, remastered the textures with higher graphical fidelity, and even added a new optional dungeon. Much of the Nintendo Switch's early game library was made up of Wii U ports, owing in part to the Switch's successes compared to the Wii U's failures. However, Twilight Princess HD has yet to make it to the Switch's library. With the official announcement of the Switch's successor around the corner, let's look at why the Switch absolutely needs to add this game to its library.

The Game

The original Twilight Princess is a great game. Its story is compelling and engaging, Midna is widely regarded as one of the series' best companion characters, and many of its dungeons are among some of the best in the series. Link in Twilight Princess is unflinchingly courageous, charging after the kidnapped children of Ordon Village despite his sword being taken from him not two minutes prior. Midna's character arc makes up much of the game's story, as she and Link go from reluctant allies to loyal friends. Among some of Twilight Princess' best dungeons are Arbiter's Grounds, City in the Sky, and Hyrule Castle itself.

Twilight Princess HD is an even better version of an already great game. The Wii U title is the definitive version of the game, between its added quality-of-life features and its wholly new content. Between requiring fewer Tears of Light for each region of Hyrule, adding a new lantern that shows when a Poe is nearby, and increasing how many Rupees Link's wallet can hold, the remake is a considerable improvement over the original game. Its virtues don't end there, either - the game also adds an entirely new optional dungeon in a similar vein to the Cave of Ordeals.

The Fans

With the massive success of both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, and with Echoes of Wisdom set to release later this month, the Zelda series has seen a growing wave of eager new fans. While the Switch does give players access to many other Zelda titles, whether through Nintendo Switch Online or remakes of other games, Twilight Princess HD is one of the few titles that has yet to receive such treatment. Releasing the game on the Switch allows new fans to experience another acclaimed Zelda title.

Early into the Switch's release, roughly half of all Switch owners owned a copy of Breath of the Wild. Many of them were existing Zelda fans, but many were also brand-new fans. Those new fans might not have a Wii U, so why not bring Twilight Princess HD to the Switch?

The Switch

By far, one of the biggest selling points for the Switch is its ability to seamlessly between traditional home console and portable console without interrupting gameplay. Famously, during E3 2019, the conference experienced a power outage where the Switches were the only consoles to keep their games running. With how widely successful the Switch has been, it makes perfect sense to port Twilight Princess HD to the console.

Existing fans of the Zelda series have also been asking for both Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD to be brought to the Switch, so there is a clear demand for such a port. Many fans enjoy the Switch's extensive game library allowing them to enjoy all of their favorite Zelda games on one console, rather than having to switch between several consoles. They also enjoy the Switch allowing them to move between playing the game on their TV and playing it on the go. Twilight Princess HD on a road trip or a plane flight, anyone?

Final Thoughts

Twilight Princess HD would make a wonderful addition to the Switch's impressive game library. Perhaps, like the original Twilight Princess, it could be a dual-console release - releasing on both the original Switch and being a launch title for the Switch's highly anticipated successor. What features and additions might such a port feature? Autosave is always a welcome addition to modern games, as seen with Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, the Link's Awakening remake, and Skyward Sword HD. Maybe a Switch release of Twilight Princess HD could fix one of the only complaints of a section of the game at its midway point: the regular combat music interrupting Midna's Lament.
