AI Reveals New Details of Shroud of Turin

The Shroud of Turin is arguably one of the most famous artifacts in Christianity. Supposedly, it was the same cloth used to cover Christ’s face and body in the burial in the tomb, after the crucifixion. Both believers and non-believers have argued about the Shroud of Turin’s legitimacy ever since it was discovered. A recent study might provide some new evidence to debate, assisted by AI.

According to the New York Post, Dr. Liberato de Caro, leading up a team of Italian researchers, shared that a broad-view X-ray that showed a similarity between the Shroud of Turin and a piece of cloth from Masada, Israel, going back to 55 to 74 CE. This was according to a study published in the Heritage journal.

Dr. Liberato de Caro and the other specialists conducted the study with a small sample from the Shroud of Turin, which is currently kept at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin, Italy.

However, the results come with one caveat. Dr. Liberato de Caro, the leader of the Heritage analysis, said in the study's conclusion that the new theory only holds up if the Shroud of Turin was kept at average temperature and relative humidity of 55 to 75% for the 13 centuries before it entered the historical record in 1354.

Nonetheless, these discoveries also led to cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology creating lifelike renderings of the facial impressions that believers are convinced were left on the cloth at the moment of Christ’s resurrection.

Christianity in AI

One created from the facial imprints by AI site Midjourney was massively similar to classical art depictions of Jesus, which included shoulder-length hair and a beard.

The AI rendering also shows the man with bloody wounds on his bare chest, suggesting that he had been tortured, noted the Daily Express, which generated the image. Another AI image generated by the Daily Mail showed a clothed figure with deep-set blue eyes and a head covering, with similar long hair and trimmed facial hair.

An AI rendering of the Shroud of Turin obtained by The Post showed the man with his eyes closed and mouth slightly parted, in a calm pose. The Shroud of Turin itself is an ancient linen cloth, 4.4 m long and 1.1 m wide, which wrapped the corpse and encoded the image of a tortured man, who was scourged.

Regardless, even if people still argue over its controversial legitimacy, the Shroud of Turin is still one of the most important artifacts in Christianity. Though the Catholic Church has no official position on its legitimacy, through history there have been popes who recognize it as a Christian relic. The sitting Pope Francis went on a pilgrimage in 2015 to pray before the Shroud of Turin.
