Meet Robert Bobroczkyi, The Basketball Player Turned "Alien: Romulus" Actor

Alien: Romulus made its theatrical release on August 16th. Its strong 80% on Rotten Tomatoes is thanks, in no small part, to its cast of talented fresh faces, one of whom was the impressively tall Robert Bobroczkyi. Standing at 7'7", Bobroczkyi portrayed the terrifying human-Xenomorph hybrid, "the Offspring," at the film's end. Alien: Romulus was Robert Bobroczkyi's first-ever film credit; before acting, he found renown in basketball.

    Beginnings In Basketball

Robert Bobroczkyi was born in Arad, Romania on July 17, 2000. His height comes as less of a surprise upon looking at his parents. Bobroczkyi was born to international Romanian basketball player Zsigmond Bobroczkyi, who stands at 7'2", a height Robert passed by age twelve. His mother, Brunhilde, a volleyball and handball player, stands at 6'1"; Robert surpassed her height by the time he was eight years old. Besides his height, Robert also got his affinity for competitive sports from his parents.

Robert's basketball career began in 2014 when Italian amateur basketball club A.S. Stella Azzurra recruited him to their academy. As a high school freshman, Bobroczkyi began playing center for A.S. Stella Azzurra, where he helped his team win the under-15 championship. He was noticed for his mid-range jumping and passing abilities. He made his name stateside in 2016 when he moved to Geneva, Ohio to attend the SPIRE Institute and Academy. Bobroczkyi made his varsity basketball debut on January 14, 2017, and in 2021, he appeared on Rochester University's JV basketball roster.

    Health Concerns For Extreme Height

Despite the clear advantage Robert Bobroczkyi's height gave him in basketball, it came with a few caveats. For many years, his weight has been a cause of concern for those watching him. Bobroczkyi was reported to have an underweight BMI of 16.1 in 2017. His stature has lent itself to his difficulty in bulking up over the years. With A.S. Stella Azzurra and during his freshman season at SPIRE, Bobroczkyi was limited to only a few minutes of playtime due to concerns about stamina and potential exhaustion. Instead, focus was placed on nutrition and strength training.

Unsurprisingly, Robert Bobroczkyi's height became a concern for doctors. Not only were they worried for the health of his heart, but also about hormone disorders like gigantism and genetic disorders like Marfan syndrome. Doctors were unsure if Bobroczkyi would ever stop growing. Fortunately, the medical studies did not find that he suffered from these serious conditions; however, he has discussed his struggle with severe scoliosis and subsequent back surgery.

    Newfound Success In Acting

In 2022, Robert Bobroczkyi appeared in an episode of the Fly or Die Podcast. In the podcast, he briefly mentioned that despite enjoying basketball, he may be at a point where he will start pursuing other career paths. This year, Bobroczkyi suddenly turned up with an impressive debut credit in the new Alien: Romulus, portraying the chilling human-Xenomorph hybrid known as the Offspring. The look was achieved by Legacy Effects with makeup and minimal CGI, instead relying on Bobroczkyi's height and thin stature to achieve the creature's final look. Animators were heavily informed by Bobroczkyi's unique movement, due to his lack of professional training in acting.

Bobroczkyi's portrayal of the Offspring evokes images of successful creature actor and contortionist Doug Jones, perhaps most well-known for playing the Pale Man and the Faun in Pan's Labyrinth (2006) and the Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water (2017). Jones represents years of experience and honing his craft, training his body to move in otherworldly ways. Similar to Bobroczkyi and the Offspring, many of Jones' creatures are achieved with prosthetics prioritized over CGI. Perhaps, with time, Bobroczkyi could achieve a similar amount of success, should he choose to pursue acting further.

    Final Thoughts

Few could've expected the appearance of the Offspring in Alien: Romulus. It was never advertised, making Robert Bobroczkyi's acting debut all the more shocking. It is unclear whether Bobroczkyi intends to continue with basketball, acting, both, or neither. It seems that the physical demands of basketball and his unique stature may continue to be at odds, but it is uplifting to know that Bobroczkyi has managed to find success elsewhere, with many praising his performance on the big screen.
