The Power Rangers will always be ready to go when evil threatens the Earth. Since the 90s, the color-coded superheroes have battled against diabolical villains and vile monsters, and audiences have loved watching them since the beginning of the show. Power Rangers has become one of the world's biggest franchises, spawning movies and much more. One new project, Power Rangers Prime, begins a new chapter in the legacy.
The Show That Started It All
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993-1996) follows five teenagers with attitude as they battle space witch Rita Repulsa. Guided by their mentor Zordon and his robot assistant Alpha 5, the Rangers defeat every monster Rita sends to destroy Earth with the aid of their impressive array of weapons and colossal mechanical Zords. When not protecting the planet, the young heroes deal with typical teenage issues. These plots often led to them knocking heads with the dimwitted bullies Bulk and Skull.
Debuting in 1993, the show stemmed from the Japanese program Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (1992-1993), part of the long-running Super Sentai series (1975-present). It used stock footage from the previously mentioned show, mainly the fighting and villain scenes. This process continues through the second and third seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and all subsequent Power Rangers seasons. The story of Zyuranger was modified for American audiences, making it easier to follow. Despite the adaptational changes and intermixing of stock footage with original footage, a phenomenal franchise was born.
The Power Lives On
Despite the initial controversy from parents, the original Power Rangers series was successful. The original show spawned two movies: 1995's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and a 2017 reboot that reimagined the original characters. Besides the movies, the series has also had many video game adaptations available on various consoles and systems since 1994. The newest one, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, is seemingly a massive love letter to fans of the original show.
Comics and graphic novels have also contributed to the Power Rangers' lasting fame. BOOM! Studios has been a renowned producer of Power Ranger comics since 2016. BOOM!'s comic series is a reboot of Mighty Morphin set in modern times, with some of the stories being Tommy's first day with the team and the team facing Lord Drakkon. The series also includes crossovers with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Godzilla. BOOM! has concluded its Mighty Morphin storyline in favor of a new one.
A New Era of Power Rangers
A new chapter to the legacy comes with the arrival of Power Rangers Prime. The latest comic series is in a redesigned universe, separate from other storylines. The only hint about the plot is that university students will cross paths with a fugitive. Melissa Flores, who has a long history with the franchise, will write the new series, while Iron Fist artist Michael Yg will handle the artwork.
Prime is a fresh way to pull in new and lifelong fans. This comic reboot is also reminiscent of Marvel's Ultimate Universe or DC's Absolute Universe; the only real difference between these three is that Prime will not coexist alongside another timeline. Prime will, however, include other Rangers from the TV series, such as Lauren Shiba from Power Rangers Super Samurai. This new series will be released in bookshops everywhere on November 13th.
