New York Mets In Spectacular Playoff Position

The New York Mets are now tied with their bitter rival, the Atlanta Braves, for the third and final National League Wild Card spot. Both teams have a 76-64 record after the Braves lost 3-1 yesterday at home to the Colorado Rockies. New York has rocketed up the standings as they have won seven straight games. The Braves have not been as successful as of late. Atlanta has gone 3-4 over their last seven games.

With only 22 games remaining in the 2024 regular season, the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves will be fighting with one another down the home stretch of the regular season for the National League's final playoff spot. Which of these teams will end up securing the final playoff spot?

New York Mets Upcoming Schedule

New York begins a three-game series at home tonight against the Cincinnati Reds as they look to keep their winning ways going. The New York Mets have a 45.3% chance to make the MLB Playoffs according to FanGraphs. Following their series with the Reds, the Mets prepare for a gauntlet that includes seven games with the Philadelphia Phillies, three games against the Atlanta Braves, and three games to end their season against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Atlanta Braves Upcoming Schedule

Atlanta enters the home stretch of the regular season with a 68.5% chance to make the MLB Playoffs. They begin a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays this evening. The Braves then welcome the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers to town for a four-game series starting next week. Atlanta ends the regular season against the Kansas City Royals. This game can have massive playoff ramifications for both Kansas City and Atlanta.

Atlanta Has Inside Track On Playoff Spot

One of the reasons the New York Mets have a much lower chance of making the playoffs is their strength of schedule compared to that of the Braves. The Mets have a .535 remaining strength of schedule which is third-highest in Major League Baseball. Atlanta's remaining strength of schedule is .500 which is 14th in the league according to Tankathon.

The New York Mets and Atlanta Braves play each other in one more series his regular season(September 24-26 in Atlanta). They are 5-5 against one another this season, and the final wild card spot in the National League may be determined by this series down in Atlanta in a few weeks. New York is on fire, and if they want to make the MLB Playoffs, will need to keep up their level of play against some of the league's best teams. The New York Mets are looking to make the playoffs for the second time in the last three years while Atlanta is gunning for their seventh straight playoff appearance.
