The #24 North Carolina State Wolfpack (1-0) and #14 Tennessee Volunteers (1-0) meet up on Saturday inside Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The neutral site game, called the Duke’s Mayo Classic, will be the first meeting between the two schools since they opened up against each other in Atlanta in 2012. The Vols won that matchup 35-21 in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff.

Tennessee Volunteers Team Preview

Last Saturday, the University of Tennessee opened up its 2024 season against the Chattanooga Mocs with a 69-3 thrashing. The offense operated well with Nico Iamaleava at the helm, and the game was basically over before it started. The bulk of the starters only played in the first half, while the second and third stringers got valuable reps in the second half.

The Volunteers made the jump from number 15 in the rankings to 12/14 in the new week two AP and Coaches Top 25. Iamaleava also moved up in the Heisman Trophy odds from +1500 to +1200. Another big week, and he could gain even more steam.

North Carolina State struggled in their 38-21 victory over Western Carolina. The Wolfpack were actually trailing for much of the game. Was that just a matter of overlooking the FCS program and looking ahead to this week against the Volunteers? Or…is there a bigger issue? The running game looked stagnant until late in the game and the defense looked surprisingly slow.

Kevin Concepcion was the major storyline in week one for NC State. The former freshman all-american found the endzone three times on nine catches and 121 yards. UConn transfer Justin Joly also looked like a feature weapon with five catches and 75 yards.

On defense, cornerback Ayden White leads the way. The senior is one of the best defensive backs in the country, and head coach Dave Doeren will need a big effort from him against the Vols potent offense. On the defensive front, Davin Vann and Brandon Cleveland will be needed to slow down Tennessee’s running attack.
