Desire Doue is the Future of Paris Saint Germain (PSG) in 2024

PSG hit the jackpot. One of Ligue 1’s most talented prospects, Desire Doue, finally ended a long transfer saga where he had to decide between multiple clubs like Bayern Munich and several Premier League clubs interested as well. The French U-21 International decided to stay in France and sign for PSG. Luis Enrique was a long admirer of the 19-year-old winger and wanted him to add to his already young squad and build a bright future for the Parisians. With Kylian Mbappe gone, could Desire Doue be talented enough to fill his shoes?

Desire Doue’s Rise in French Football

Stade Rennais FC has developed a habit of nurturing talented footballers and selling them for good profits, like Mathys Tel, Jeremy Doku, Steve Mandanda, Amine Gouiri, and so many more. Desire Doue became the latest on the list as PSG snatched him from the noses of former German champions Bayern Munich for a fee of around 50M euros. The talented, dynamic winger came through the ranks of Rennais at 11.

Immediately caught attention through the youth academy and started to train with the first team in 2011 for the first time. Eventually, he signed his first professional contract at 17 in April 2022. At just 19, he played 60 games for Rennes over two years, receiving high accolades in the French media and attracting interest from clubs, particularly in Germany and England.

Following an extended transfer saga, specifically around the decision to join Bayern Munich or remain in France with PSG, the young player opted for the latter for 50 Million Euros, as mentioned earlier. With a world-class player like Kylian Mbappe leaving for Real Madrid, that too for free, Luis Enrique knew he had to search the market for young, talented players who could go on to maybe one day become one of the best in the world.

Desire Doue’s skill is undeniable, especially considering how much of an impression he made on French football at just 19. He still has a lot of work ahead of him in a much larger role at PSG, where the expectations are much higher.

Style of play and Impact on PSG’s Plans

PSG has a dynamic and versatile young player capable of playing in various attacking positions. Primarily he is a right-footed left winger but can use both feet, but has also featured in the midfield as a No.10, No. 8, and even a No. 6 on occasions receiving the ball from the deep and carrying it into the opposition box. As a ball carrier, he had 98% progressive carries into the opposition box. He likes to receive the ball from midfield and drive into the final third with exceptional dribbling and tight space navigational ability. Doue also had 83% progressive passes, which means he’s a very decent forward-thinking passer of the ball.

These stats are from last season with Rennes. As a winger, he prefers to play on the left but can also operate on the right wing. His primary trait as a winger is to get past defenders with his exceptional dribbling skills, and even at the age of 19, he has maturity in his decision-making. He was among the Top 5 players with successful take-ons attempted in the Ligue 1 last season, and he was among the Top 6 players where his take-ons resulted in goals and assists.

Doue likes to play one or two passes with his teammates and moves in good positions to receive the ball back and create or score chances. His versatility and speed allow him to drift in midfield play as an out-and-out winger and torment the defenders. This will give PSG and Luis Enrique a new dynamic. However, Doue has to improve his goals and assists ratio if he has to compete and play ahead of Bradley Barcola on the left wing or even Dembele on the right.

While playing just two games for PSG, he already has one assist in his name, as he came on as a sub in both games and had an average rating of 7.45 in both matches. PSG now has a core of talented young players, with Bradley Barcola playing exceptionally and the Portugal International Joao Neves making an immediate impact. Doue can help and maybe become a real French and European football force together.
