Destiny 2 Frontiers: Future of the Franchise Revealed

After the launch of The Final Shape expansion in Destiny 2, the saga of Light and Dark came to an end. Fans were left wondering what the future of the franchise would look like after this annual expansion ends. Bungie had not revealed anything except for a teaser that the next journey is titled as Codename Frontiers. However, on 9 September 2024, Bungie released a blog post showing exactly what content will be arriving next year. Here is everything that was revealed.

Content Roadmap

Frontiers is the codename for the next annual content for Destiny 2 mainly for the year 2025. However, Bungie has revealed that Frontiers is not an annual expansion but will comprise two shorter expansions each spanning 6 months. The Game Director gave the reason that creating an annual expansion takes much of the development time and this new format will allow them to push more content as well as experiment more gameplay-wise. The first expansion will be called Apollo and will be released in Summer 2025. The second expansion will be Behemoth and will start in the Winter of 2025. Other than that, the seasonal model is also making a return.

Each expansion will be comprised of two seasons, each spanning three months. The two seasons of Apollo are named Codename: Arsenal and Codename: Surge. These seasons will feature content that will be different than the content released with the expansions. Each expansion will feature a brand-new destination and will feature areas never seen before in Destiny history. The expansions will also be a non-linear story-driven campaign giving players more freedom to explore. Other than the destination and new campaign missions, each expansion will feature a brand-new set of armor and weapons. The biggest news however is that each expansion will be released with a brand-new Dungeon and Raid. These are the ultimate pinnacle activity of Destiny 2.

Changes to Content

Bungie has confirmed that the gameplay loop of expansions and seasonal models has grown stale over the years. Therefore, they are making changes that will innovate the gameplay. Expansions will now be more non-linear, allowing players to explore the story on their own. This will add to the sense of mystery and discovery that Destiny once had. Also, the biggest thing is that the end of Apollo expansion will kickstart a brand-new saga that will span over multiple years.

Each season will also be adding a brand-new set of activities as well as returning activities. However, Bungie is determined to innovate these activities by adding different mechanics and modifiers. They mentioned that they will be adding more RPG elements that will be inspired by Rogue-like games. Each season will also come with the usual Artifact Perks as well as seasonal events.

Changes to Activities & Rewards

Bungie also wants to simplify the process of getting into activities as well as obtaining rewards. There are tons of activities in the game and developers want to streamline the onboarding process for new players. Starting with Frontiers, Destiny 2 will feature a brand-new UI called the Portal. It will allow the players to easily navigate through the different activities that are present in the game.

Each activity will be divided into different tiers of difficulty and how each difficulty version is different will be shown more clearly. Destiny 2 will also add to the loot chase by incentivizing players with more and different tiers of loot to chase. Each difficulty will provide a specific tier of weapons with higher difficulties providing higher tier weapons. New gear that is tied to the latest season and expansion will also be given a different visual cue.
