New York Mets Use Late Game Rally To Defeat Toronto Blue Jays

The New York Mets used a late surge on offense to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on the road tonight. Both teams saw their offense get off to a sluggish start this evening. This game was scoreless through three innings until Designated Hitter J.D. Martinez had an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. The Toronto Blue Jays responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 2-1 lead.

New York would not go quietly into the night as a wild pitch scored Tyrone Taylor and star Catcher Francisco Alvarez scored on the past ball for the final run of the game in the top of the eighth. The New York Mets tossed two scoreless innings to secure the victory. Will New York be able to carry this momentum into tomorrow's game?

New York Mets Win Thanks To Timely Hitting and Pitching

New York Mets Starting Pitcher Tylor Megill had one of the best starts of his career this evening. He tossed six scoreless and struck out nine. Megill also surrendered one hit in his masterful performance. Unfortunately, he walked away with a no-decision as Relief Pitcher Danny Young gave up two earned over only a third of an inning.

Young was the only sore spot of a New York bullpen that was good tonight. The unit surrendered one earned run over three innings of work. Closer Edwin Diaz shut the door in the bottom of the ninth inning for his 17th save of the season. The New York Mets now hold a one-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the third and final National League Wild Card spot.

Looking Ahead To Tomorrow's Game

The middle game of this three-game set will see New York Mets Starting Pitcher David Peterson(9-1, 2.75 ERA) opposed by Blue Jays Starting Pitcher and former Met Chris Bassitt(9-13, 4.30 ERA). Peterson has been the ace of NY's pitching staff and one of the best pitchers in the league this season. His ERA would be fourth in the league if he had enough starts to qualify. He had a career-high 11 strikeouts in his last start against the Boston Red Sox. Peterson will look to build on that start tomorrow night in Canada.

Bassitt will look to exact revenge on his former ballclub tomorrow evening. He spent 2022 as a member of the New York Mets. Bassitt is coming off an average start in last appearance against the Philadelphia Phillies. He tossed 5.1 innings and surrendered three earned runs. New York will look to keep their lead in the wild card race and secure a series victory.
