Commanders Plan on Signing Kicker Austin Seibert

The day will eventually come when the Washington Commanders will discover their kicker. In the meantime, the merry-go-round will keep on whirling. The team released the little-tested Cade York on Monday. For what is still part of an ongoing quest for a regular kicker in Washington, the Commanders are expected to sign veteran kicker Austin Seibert.

Everything has been up in the air lately as far as kicking goes for the Commanders. Last month, Washington took Cade York from the Cleveland Browns, and he had one heck of a terrible first game with his new team. He missed two field goals and booted a kickoff out of bounds in last week’s season-opening loss to Tampa Bay. The performance wasn’t what they wanted, as the Commanders cut ties with him after one game.

Alright, so why do the Commanders want Austin Seibert? Well, Seibert offers a good combination of experience and potential. Seibert was drafted by the Cleveland Browns back in 2019, and through some inconsistency early in his career, he has continued to find opportunities. He’s played for the Bengals, Lions, Saints, and Jets, showing that despite poor past performances, teams believe in his talents.

Seibert’s NFL career has been a bit of a rollercoaster: drafted by the Browns, he was waived early in his second year after missing some kicks. He then signed brief stints with the Bengals and Lions before being waived once more. Last year, he spent time on practice squads with the Saints and Jets, which speaks to how he has handled two tough blows and remains viable in the league.

Through 31 NFL games, Seibert has made 45 of 56 field goals long of 53 yards and added 56 of 62 extra points. The numbers would tend to indicate that while Seibert may not be a kicker who can boast a great deal of consistency, he has also proven he can perform under pressure and possesses a strong leg.

Washington’s Kicking Shuffle

It’s been quite the search, but Washington has been looking for a reliable kicker. Since releasing Brandon McManus in June, the team has cycled through several kickers, including Ramiz Ahmed and Riley Patterson. Cade York was the latest to try and fill the void, but it just didn’t quite work out. So here comes Seibert to hopefully steady the kicking waters.

Interestingly, the careers of Seibert and York paralleled each other once before. Each was a mid-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, and now York’s extremely short stay in Washington essentially picked up right where Seibert’s ended. A situation that goes to show is always searching time for an NFL team when it comes to finding the right fit at kicker.

For the Commanders, signing Seibert might be that epiphany. A reliable kicker equates to wins, especially in close games. If Seibert happens to be what he says he is, he’ll be the reason why Washington will win close games, where often the fine line between contention and obscurity comes into play within the NFL.

The Future Outlook

So now, the future of Washington’s kicking game rests in the hands of Seibert. It would seem that by bringing him aboard, the team does believe he has some realistic potential to contribute positively. If Seibert can take his experiences from the past and carry them over to do consistent performances, he can be that stability the Commanders have been looking for.

It is, therefore, clear that with the signing of Austin Seibert, Commanders have been working hard to secure a reliable kicker. The impending signing of Seibert comes with great hopes because of his background and previous performances in fulfilling this sensitive role. With the kicking dilemma still haunting the team, Seibert might just be that missing link toward augmenting their winning possibilities this season.
