Outstanding Secondary at Ohio State is 2nd to None

Ohio State may have the best secondary in the nation, second to none. They have two all-Americans and go at least eight deep. Some backups will never even see the field on this team and could start for other Division One college football powers. This article will review the wealth of talent Ohio State has in their secondary and show why most opponents will likely not have a passing touchdown against the Buckeyes. Ohio State is quickly becoming a defensive secondary university, as Denzel Ward is a graduate and a star in the NFL.

    Denzel Burke

It begins with All American fourth-year player, Denzel Burke. He may be the best cornerback in the nation. He is a vital part of the secondary. He returned to Ohio State instead of becoming a professional to defeat Ohio State’s rival, the University of Michigan. He played only one defensive series against Western Michigan. He was ejected for targeting. His vitality notwithstanding, his targeting penalty against Western Michigan was not too big of a deal because the Buckeye’s secondary is so deep. Because he was ejected in the first half, he will be eligible to play the entire game against Marshall.

    Davison Igbinosun

Davison Igbinosun is the other starting cornerback in Ohio State’s defensive secondary. He transferred to Ohio State before last season from the University of Mississippi, where he also played in the secondary. Upon his transfer to Ohio State, he became an immediate starter. Since opposing teams rarely throw the football to Burke’s side of the field, Igbinosun gets a lot of throws. This is evidenced by his five pass breakups last year. Igbinosun is also a stout defender, routinely flying to the ball in true ‘silver bullet’ fashion. He made 59 total tackles last year—a high number for a player in the defensive secondary.

    Jordan Hancock

Jordan Hancock is a fourth-year senior in the Ohio State defensive secondary playing cornerback. Part of the 2021 recruiting class, he has been a part of the team for four years. He also gets many footballs thrown his way because of the dominant Denzel Burke. He had a career-high 41 tackles last year in the Ohio State defensive secondary, and Ohio State is looking for big things from him this season. He is a solid, if not spectacular, contributor in Ohio State’s defensive secondary.

    Caleb Downs

Caleb Downs is a sophomore transfer from Alabama who plays safety in the Ohio State defensive secondary, but he has frequently had coverage responsibilities in the Ohio State defensive secondary. As a freshman at Alabama, he had 107 total tackles. He too flies around and supports the run. Downs is an All-American too in the Ohio State defensive secondary. Because he is a sophomore, he will play in the Ohio State defensive secondary again next year.

    Lathan Ransom

Lathan Ransom is a senior starter in the defensive secondary for Ohio State. They play five defensive backs in the defensive secondary and only two linebackers. Ransom started most of his career in the Ohio State defensive secondary. He has garnered a lot of tackles in his career, including a high of 72 tackles in 2022. He has played for five seasons and is very experienced. He had nine tackles against the University of Akron and has tended to come up biggest when Ohio State needs him most. He got injured last year and missed some time. That hurt. He also plays on special teams.

    The Back Ups

Several backups would be starters in the defensive secondary for other Division One teams. It is worth knowing the names of these backups in the Ohio State defensive secondary, in no particular order: Glorian Gough, Keenan Nelson Jr., Jaydon Bonsu, Malik Horford, Brenton Jones, Jaylon McLain, Leroy Rocker III, Ryan Rudsinski, Sonny Styles, Diante Griffen, Miles Lockhardt, Jermaine Matthews Jr., Bakari Miles Jr., Aman Scott Jr., Calvin Simpson-Hunt, Lorenzo Styles Jr. (a sometime starter), and Bryce West.
