Josh Brolin Passes on HBO’s Lanterns

On September 10th, news broke via THR that sources confirm that actor Josh Brolin, who has been reported to be the front-runner for the role of Green Lantern Hal Jordan, has officially passed on the role. This means the search for who will carry the power ring will continue. Despite consistent rumors, the trade confirmed that Matthew McConaughey is no longer in the mix, as prior rumors linked the actor to the project.

The trade also revealed that DC and the show’s producers have unveiled their vision and guidelines for the character of Stewart to be relatively younger and a more fresh-faced actor for the role to play opposite an older and more significant name for the role of Jordan.

Other details related to ‘Lanterns’ are that the studio wants to get cameras rolling on the project by early next year. Reports indicate that filming will occur from next January to the summer of July 2025 in Atlanta. The series has also been licensed and will fall under the umbrella of title as an HBO original, for which, at this moment, casting is underway for actors and directors alike.

Gunn has also assembled a writer’s room for the series, led by Ozark’s Chris Mundy. Mundy is show-running the eight-episode series along with Damon Lindelof, the creator of HBO’s Watchmen and the seminal TV show Lost, credited as one of the writers, and Eisner Award-winning comics author Tom King.

James Gunn and Peter Safran Comment

When Lanterns‘ creative team was first revealed, James Gunn and Peter Safran, as Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios, released a joint statement that read, We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm.”

John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.'”

A synopsis for the series best describes the new HBO original Lanterns, utilizing a True Detective vibe best explained by Gunn. Further details offer insight that the series is set to focus on Jordan reluctantly mentoring a younger Lantern, John Stewart, who, in DC publishing history, was one of the company’s first Black superheroes. The story sees the two characters investigating an Earth-bound murder with larger implications.

    Conclusion

The latest DC Comics live-action series will fall under the umbrella and leadership of Director James Gunn, who is also one-half of the leadership as a co-CEO with partner Peter Safran. It is part of the newly formed coalition DCU, a new shared continuity that looks to differentiate from Marvel Studios.

Lanterns has no slated release date.
