James McAvoy Defends Alternative Ending For ‘Speak No Evil’ Remake

Actor James McAvoy recently defended the alternative ending of his film, Blumhouse Productions’ remake of Speak No Evil (2022). The new movie, directed by James Watkins, comes to theaters this week. It is an American adaptation of the original Danish psychological horror thriller, which is widely known for its gruesome climax. James McAvoy expressed his approval of the decision to tweak the narrative, as it accomplishes the filmmakers’ unique goals and helps the story stand on its own.

The “Only” Ending for this Version of Speak No Evil

Though he was already known in the UK for his work in the original Shameless (2004) TV series, James McAvoy first rose to prominence in America for his roles in prestige films like The Last King of Scotland and Atonement. Soon afterward, he hit it big internationally with the X-Men movie franchise, where he portrayed a younger Professor Charles Xavier. In recent years, after his forceful performance in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, James McAvoy has carved a niche in the horror and thriller genres. James Watkins’ remake of Speak No Evil – which releases in America on September 13 – is McAvoy’s latest energetic outing in the category.

McAvoy spoke to Digital Spy and addressed fan concerns regarding the alternative ending in the Blumhouse production. “I think it’s the only ending our film could have, and it’s the only one that would work for our film,” he told them. “That’s not to say that the other ending or the other film doesn’t work as it does. It’s a great film, but they’re doing slightly different things, and they’re trying to do different things to the audience.”

Speaking About Speak No Evil (Spoilers Below)

The Speak No Evil Danish film follows a couple going on a Tuscan vacation with their child. They have the misfortune of attracting the attention of some serial killers. Trying to be polite, the innocent couple gives the serial killers a bit too much leeway in their interactions, until they can’t tear themselves away from their would-be murderers. It happens to the best of us.

Eventually, the family endures a distressing third act at the hands of the killers, leaving audiences hopeless after staring down the characters’ ultimate fate. Director James Watkins lightens up a little. The 2024 Speak No Evil remake follows the similarly clever and disturbing path laid down by the original, this time transposing American tourists to Devon in the UK. The story beats coincide with the Danish blueprint until they don’t – inviting viewers into a less gloomy alternative.

    Final Thoughts

At the time of writing, the new movie has been Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting an 88% Critics score, although audience ratings have yet to come through on the Popcornmeter. James McAvoy’s performance has been highly praised. At least the critics seem pleased enough with the overall film.

In a climate thick with remakes and adaptations, filmmakers and moviegoers alike need to justify their reasoning for considering repackaged material. And with the first film being only two years old, the spark of creativity in the Blumhouse project should be applauded.
