HC Dan Quinn Energized For Week 2: Team Is Growing Strong

For Washington Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn, the season is a growing process. That was seen in Sunday’s 37-20 loss to Tampa Bay. They’ll have to grow quickly, facing the New York Giants in Week 2.

When asked by media Wednesday what kind of “jump” can be made by a rookie quarterback like Jayden Daniels from Week 1 to Week 2 Quinn said, “I hope you see it from the entire team…You’re working an individual skill, now you get to work it with the whole unit.”

He explained there’s a difference between practicing on your own and practicing with the team and that growth is seen and will be seen as the team comes together. “It applies to Jayden, but I think it applies overall. You’ve heard me talk about the skills and the overall work, and now when you put all of that together…that’s where I think you can see the chemistry, the communication of more laps together.”

In reference to Week 1, Quinn said the Week 1 loss was “…our first lap at it together…that’s what you want to see the execution, the chemistry continues to take off…these are chances to grow and develop. I think they can be done quickly.”

With that growth comes the development of new faces with the old. One of those was Luke McCaffrey, who caught three for 18 yards in Sunday’s game. Quinn said he expects to see more reps and more playing time for him.

We’ve really seen that confidence grow especially inside in the slot where he can use some of that strength…I can see his development continue to grow. That’s going to happen with the younger players. They gotta get into the fight. That’s where you grow. The hard part about that [is] there are some mistakes at times, but you have to be as a coach willing to go through that knowing that on the other end of that is the development, is the success. I was pleased to see what Luke had in the first performance for him.

Quinn said he feels the same way about former Dallas Wide Receiver Noah Brown, who finished last season with 33 catches for 567 receiving yards. Surprisingly enough he was inactive against the Bucs. When asked if that was because he had just got to the team Quinn agreed, saying “correct”. Quinn said, “We really see that trending in the right way…Noah worked really hard [to get up to speed on all the systems] But he’s worked really hard on that. We’re definitely trending in the right space for him to get up and ready. He’s definitely chomping at the bit… He’s really trending at the right direction.”

Dan Quinn On His First NFC East Game of The Season

The Washington Commanders were 4-13 last season finishing at the bottom of the NFC East. Going into a Division game already with a loss, Quinn says there’s a lot to prepare for: “There’s a lot that goes into the division. Both teams know each other better.”

Dan Quinn explained the first game is usually when teams are evaluating the matchups, who’s new, what’s being played the same, and what’s being played differently. “The second time [you look at] what new wrinkles can you expect. To be a part of this…what a cool honor. This is a strong division.”

    Dan Quinn Provides Injury Updates

Dan Quinn was very optimistic on the following injuries and feels they will not be showstoppers for Sunday’s game against the Giants.

    • Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr.: “He banged up his wrist,” Quinn said, adding he had a splint on it Wednesday. “It’s not going to knock him out…We’ll work it through the week.”
    • Defensive Tackle Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton: Newton was listed as a limited participant on the injury report last week. He has been with a foot injury that has affected him throughout training camp. According to Quinn, there’s a possibility he may be in action Sunday against the Giants. Newton was pushed hard in conditioning Tuesday, and they’ll have a better sense of what his status is on Friday. “We’re close, for sure,” Quinn said.
