The Dark Universe of Dead by Daylight Explained

Dead by Daylight is renowned for engaging gameplay with friends and enemies alike, being beloved and supported to this day. However, the lore of the game was more of an afterthought, until now. Given the recent release of The Casting of Frank Stone, we may have all the answers to some burning questions.

The Entity

Although The Entity's exact nature and origin remains unknown, we at least know its motive and how all of this is accomplished. The Entity has existed for so long, that no one knows when or where it originated. All we know is that it has existed and influenced the world for centuries, possibly for thousands of years in modern human history. Considering that many killers and survivors of the trials all come from different periods in history, it shows that The Entity has a considerable amount of control over time and space.

From as early as the Ubaid Period in history where The Plague was from, to as far in the future as the year 2313 where The Singularity originates from, The Entitiy's control over time and space knows no bounds. The Entity travels across the various timelines in search of people, entities, and monstrosities to influence into killing and sacrificing in their name to satisfy their eternal hunger. Along with these killers come survivors who have survived their initial wraith and have now been selected as sacrifices to The Entity.

The Casting of Frank Stone

The Casting of Frank Stone has shown us that this dark universe full of death and misery is a collection of alternate realities and timelines from one universe. Although The Entity is not powerful enough to infiltrate any reality that it pleases, it can still effortlessly influence its inhabitants to carry out their work to allow it to break into their world. One such example is the vessel known as Augustine Lieber and the killer Frank Stone, a.k.a. The Champion.

Augustine was a member of a cult that worshipped The Entity, she learned all about The Entity, along with it promising her rewards and power beyond her wildest dreams. However, The Entity demanded sacrifices to satiate its hunger and a champion to carry out the sacrifices needed for the ritual which will in turn, allow The Entity to successfully infiltrate their world. Despite being initially stopped due to the efforts of Sam Green in 1963, events that played out in the years 1980 and 2024 allowed for The Champion's resurrection, along with Augustine being the final sacrifice needed to allow The Entity to infiltrate their world and begin a new trial of Dead by Daylight.

The Trials of Dead by Daylight

The trials are the ultimate endgame for The Entity. Once The Entity has managed to successfully infiltrate a reality, it will turn their world, or at least part of it, into a purgatory, from which the survivors, nor the killer can ever escape. The survivors serve as sacrifices to feed The Entity, while the killer serves as a vessel and servant to The Entity to hunt down and sacrifice said survivors to become fodder for itself.

Despite the premise being that repairing generators will power doors that will allow survivors to escape, or the hatch for the final survivor, there is no true escape. They're forever stuck in an endless cycle of death and suffering as The Entity has them participate in these trials. The greater the hunger grows for The Entity, the more survivors and killers are taken into purgatory, to serve as game and entertainment for the Entity and the killers of Dead by Daylight.

Sacrificial vessels like Augustine Lieber weren't the only way The Entity managed to gain killers for its goal. Many killers were "saved" from the brink of death or influenced in the darkest moments in their lives to serve The Entity without question, having their minds clouded by instinct, rage, sorrow, or false righteousness beliefs. The Entity has control over everything, save for the actions of the survivors and the outcome of each trial. It's a game of cat and mouse for all of them, an endless cycle of death and resurrection to a dark god, with no way out.

Departing Thoughts

Dead by Daylight is a dark rabbit hole of death and misery. We may never know what is The Entity or where it came from, but it's clear that it exists in another plane of existence, possibly even from another dimension. Is it an experiment gone wrong? A deity that has existed as long as time itself? A ritual for power gone awry? We may never know. Dead by Daylight has a lot of lore for not only the existence of the game but also, the killers and survivors alike.

Who knows what will be in store for the game for the foreseeable future? One thing is for certain, The Entity's hunger grows, the killers thirst for blood, and the survivors must try to survive the darkness, to make sure that they don't wound up dead before they see daylight again.
