Aprilia’s Struggles at San Marino: Aleix Espargaro and Vinales Reflect

Aleix Espargaro and the Aprilia team struggled to find a competitive pace during the San Marino Grand Prix, facing difficulties throughout the weekend. The grip was excellent on this particular track and Aprilia’s performance did not meet the expectations, this saddened Espargaro as he faced two back-to-back difficult races. Maverick Vinales also had some troubles, just like other riders, who made certain strategic moves during the brief rain, which was unproductive to them here. The team has entered into a bad phase; they have been performing poorly; especially in Aragon, they failed to give a better show.

Qualifying and Sprint Challenges

Except for Maverick Vinales, who did get through to the Q2, his qualifying result was poor, setting the 11th position. Aprilia’s performance in the sprint race was not satisfying, as the team failed to score any points. The main race saw Miguel Oliveira for Trackhouse Racing be the highest-finishing Aprilia rider in 11th place but was 46 seconds behind the winner.

Aprilia’s Hard Choices and Unfavorable Outcomes

In the grand prix, both factory team members Aleix Espargaro and Vinales decided to make pit stops at the time of a brief rain shower. It would be qualifying 13th and Espargaro would not make it to the finish of the Grand Prix. Recalling the race weekend, Espargaro pointed out the challenges that he faced in the race. Espargaro also stressed issues that he and the team have faced at the previous rounds, in which he admitted that they have been lacking some essentials on their bikes, which has caused frustration.

Vinales explained his decision to switch tires during the race. He initially started with a medium rear tire but struggled to get it up to temperature. When the rain began, his poor feeling on the bike prompted him to pit. He stated that

I started the race with the medium rear tyre and I needed more laps to get the tyre up to temperature, Vinales, who finished a lapped 16th, explained. But it started to rain and my feeling was very bad on the bike. So, I saw more and more rain was coming and I decided to pit in based on the feelings. As soon as I go out and did just one lap, then I was forced to go in and change to the dry tyres. Then I had a good rhythm, to be honest, but we tried.

The disappointing results at Misano highlight ongoing challenges for the Aprilia team. Espargaro and Vinales are eager to address these issues as they move forward, aiming to improve their competitiveness in future races.
