The Imagination Library was created in memory of Dolly’s father, “I created the Imagination Library as a tribute to my daddy,” Parton explains. “He was the smartest man I have ever known but I know in my heart his inability to read probably kept him from fulfilling all of his dreams coming true.” Parton admitted she also struggled to read at first, and she wanted to give kids the opportunity to know how to read easier than she did.

Since 1995, the program has delivered 17,000 books for children for free from birth until the child reaches 5 years old. Families can apply online to ImaginationLibrary.com or mail a registration to headquarters. This is to ensure all children, no matter what, are given a chance to read and an opportunity to reach their fullest potential.
